Marseille and Provence are wonderful for families — stunning coastline, warm weather, and great food. Getting from the airport with kids takes a little planning. Here's what to know.
The airport
Marseille Provence Airport has two terminals, both modern and manageable. Family facilities include:
- Baby-changing rooms in arrivals and departures
- Pharmacy in the terminal
- Small shops for snacks and water
- Free luggage trolleys
The airport is not huge — you'll be through arrivals in 15-20 minutes. Strollers are collected at the baggage belt.
Child seats — the French rules
French law requires child restraints for children under 10 years old (or under 135 cm). The reality:
- Taxis: Technically required to have them or allow you to use yours, but in practice no taxi has child seats
- Shuttle bus: No child seats (kids sit on regular seats)
- Transfers: Can provide infant, toddler, and booster seats on request
- Car rental: Child seats available for a daily fee — book in advance and check the current price with the rental company
For families with children under 5, a transfer with child seats or a rental car is the responsible choice.
Best transport for families
Shuttle bus — works for older kids
The bus to Gare Saint-Charles is fine for families with children who can sit independently. There's luggage storage underneath. The 25-minute ride is comfortable. From the station, take the metro or a short taxi to your hotel.
Not great with strollers + multiple bags — space is limited inside the coach.
Taxi — convenient but no child seats
Taxis are metered; the airport estimates about €60 by day to the city center, before extras. A large sedan handles 2-3 bags plus a stroller. But no child seats — this is the trade-off.

Car rental — best for Provence exploration
If you're spending a week in Provence, rent a car. The Calanques, hilltop villages, and Provencal towns are best explored by car. Add child seats to your booking (reserve early in summer — they run out).

Practical tips for families
- Sun protection: Provence sun is strong May-September. Apply sunscreen at the airport before heading out.
- Water: Stay hydrated. Buy water at the terminal — it's cheaper than hotel prices.
- Summer crowds: July-August is peak season. The airport shuttle can be standing-room-only. Consider a transfer if you don't want to stand with kids.
- Mistral wind: The famous Provencal wind can make outdoor transport stops cold even in warm weather. Have a light jacket handy.
- Food: Marseille has excellent food for adventurous kids — fresh fish, panisses (chickpea fries), and of course crêpes.
- Language: French is essential outside tourist centers. Have key phrases ready or use a translation app.
