Marseille's taxi system has a unique advantage: fixed fares from the airport. This removes the usual uncertainty that makes transfers attractive. But there are still situations where a transfer wins.
The taxi situation
Marseille Airport taxis are well-regulated for airport trips:
Fixed fares (no meter):
- Marseille center (day): €50
- Marseille center (night/Sunday): €58
- Aix-en-Provence: €60-70
The taxi experience:
- Professional, licensed drivers
- Clean cars (mostly Peugeot 508, Mercedes E-Class)
- Usually available at the rank (5-15 minute wait)
- French-speaking (limited English with some drivers)
- Card payment accepted
- The rank can have longer waits during peak arrivals (summer, school holidays)
- Some drivers prefer not to go to certain destinations outside the fixed-fare zone
- No child seats available
- No vehicle choice — you get what's next
When a transfer makes more sense
Going outside Marseille: The fixed fare only covers Marseille and Aix. If you're headed to Cassis, Arles, Avignon, or a Provence villa, there's no fixed fare. A taxi will use the meter, and you won't know the final cost. A transfer locks in the price.
Child seats: No Marseille taxi has a child seat. If you need one, a transfer is your only option.
Large groups: A minivan transfer for 6-8 people (€60-90) costs about the same as the taxi fixed fare, with more space.
Language: Transfer companies usually offer English-speaking drivers. This matters less in Marseille than some people fear (most drivers know enough), but if communication is important to you, transfers are more reliable.
Late night after the last shuttle: If you arrive after midnight and the taxi rank is thin, a pre-booked transfer guarantees your ride.
Comparison
| Factor | Taxi (fixed fare) | Transfer | |---|---|---| | Price to Marseille | €50 day / €58 night | €45-70 | | Price to Cassis | Metered (unpredictable) | €75-100 (fixed) | | Wait time | 5-15 min | 0 min | | Booking needed | No | Yes | | Child seat | No | On request | | Meet at arrivals | No (rank outside) | Yes (name sign) | | English | Variable | Usually yes | | Payment | Card or cash | Card |
What about the shuttle bus?
Before choosing between taxi and transfer, consider: the shuttle bus costs €10 and takes 25 minutes to Gare Saint-Charles. If you're going to the Vieux Port area, the shuttle + a short walk saves you €40-50 compared to a taxi. The shuttle is the elephant in the room that makes both taxis and transfers feel expensive.
Our recommendation
Going to Marseille center: Shuttle bus (€10) if you're budget-conscious. Taxi (€50) if you want door-to-door. Transfer only if you need child seats.
Going to Aix-en-Provence: Aix shuttle bus (€10) or taxi (€60-70). Similar logic.
Going to Provence (Cassis, Arles, etc.): Transfer with fixed pricing. Or rent a car.
Family with young kids: Transfer with child seats.
Late night: Taxi if available at the rank. Transfer if you want certainty.
