SLU - Castries

Arriving at SLU Airport with Family and Kids

George F. L. Charles Airport is small and easy to navigate, which is actually good news for families. There is not much walking, not much waiting, and the ride to most northern Saint Lucia destinations is relatively short. Here is what to plan for.

Getting through the terminal

SLU is a single-story regional airport. You deplane via stairs onto the tarmac (no jet bridges), walk a short distance into the terminal, clear immigration, and collect your bags. The whole process is compact. With young children, this is easier than navigating a large international hub — there are fewer places to lose anyone.

The terminal has basic restrooms but no dedicated family facilities, baby changing rooms, or play areas. There is limited food available inside, so bring snacks from the flight if your children will need something.

The heat factor

Saint Lucia is tropical, and the heat and humidity are noticeable the moment you step outside. If you have young children, minimizing the time between baggage claim and an air-conditioned vehicle matters. A pre-booked transfer parked and waiting is ideal — you walk out, find your driver, and get into a cool car within minutes.

Car seats

Child car seats are not provided by standard taxis at SLU. If your children need car seats, you have two options: bring your own travel car seat, or arrange a private transfer and request seats in advance. When booking, specify the ages and weights of your children so the provider can supply appropriate seats.

Enforcement of car seat laws in Saint Lucia is inconsistent, but using a proper seat for young children is the responsible choice regardless.

Luggage and vehicle size

Families with strollers, beach gear, and multiple suitcases will want a minivan or SUV rather than a sedan. Standard taxis at SLU include some minivans, but you cannot guarantee availability. A pre-booked transfer lets you specify the vehicle size. This is particularly important if you are heading to Rodney Bay or further — a 30-minute drive in a cramped vehicle with overtired children is not anyone's idea of a holiday start.

Best approach

Book a private transfer with a minivan. Request child seats if needed. Have your accommodation address confirmed and shared with the driver in advance. The short ride from SLU to Castries or the 20-minute ride to Rodney Bay will be over before the children have time to get restless.
