SLU - Castries

Taxi vs Private Transfer at George F. L. Charles Airport

Getting from SLU to your accommodation involves a simple choice: grab a taxi outside the terminal or have a driver waiting with your name. Both work. The best option depends on where you are going and when you arrive.

Taxis at SLU

Licensed taxis wait in the small parking area in front of the terminal. Vehicles range from sedans to minivans. Saint Lucia uses government-set fares, so you should not need to negotiate — the driver has a rate card with fixed prices by destination. This system is more transparent than many Caribbean airports.

The process is quick. You walk out, find a driver, confirm your destination and fare, and leave. For a 10-minute ride to central Castries, this takes barely any time. The experience is generally fine, though vehicle quality varies and air conditioning is not guaranteed in older cars.

Pre-booked private transfers

A private transfer means a driver is assigned to you before you land. They track your flight, wait at arrivals with a name sign, and drive you directly to your accommodation. The vehicle is typically newer and the driver knows your exact destination, which matters for resorts outside the main towns.

Pricing is similar to taxi rates, occasionally slightly higher. The real value is certainty — particularly useful at SLU where the airport is small and taxi availability can be limited if several flights arrive together or if you arrive in the evening.

The case for taxis

If you are heading to Castries during daylight hours, a taxi is the straightforward and economical choice. The fixed fare system means you know the cost, the ride is short, and the process is simple. For solo travelers or couples with standard luggage, there is no reason to overcomplicate it.

The case for private transfers

For resort destinations — Rodney Bay, Marigot Bay, Cap Estate — a pre-booked transfer is the better option. These destinations require longer drives on roads that can be tricky to navigate, and having a confirmed driver who knows the exact resort entrance saves hassle. Families with children, travelers with significant luggage, and anyone arriving in the evening should also lean toward a pre-booked transfer.

One thing to watch

Some taxi drivers at SLU may offer to give you a tour of the island on the way to your hotel. This can be a genuine offer, but make sure you agree on the cost upfront if you accept. If you just want to get to your hotel, politely decline and confirm the direct fare.
