The shuttle is genuinely good value

At 2-3 €, the airport shuttle is one of the cheapest airport connections in France (Hérault Transport's own published fares, current 2026). The buses are modern, air-conditioned, and timed to flights. The 3 € combined ticket already covers the connecting tram ride to Place de l'Europe and onward — no second ticket needed.

For solo travelers and couples without heavy luggage, this is the obvious choice during operating hours.

When the taxi makes more sense

For groups: A taxi split 3 ways is often close to the shuttle + tram cost per person, with door-to-door convenience.

With luggage: Managing bags on a bus + tram connection isn't fun. The taxi goes straight to your hotel.

Night arrivals: After the last shuttle (~11 PM), taxi or transfer is your only option.

French taxi pricing explained

Montpellier taxis are regulated by the préfecture of Hérault (arrêté préfectoral n° 26-XIX-011, effective 16 January 2026), which sets a maximum tariff:

  • Pickup fee: 3.25 €
  • Tariff A (day, driver returns with a fare): 1.11 €/km
  • Tariff C (day, driver returns empty — the usual case for a one-way airport pickup): 2.22 €/km
  • Tariff B (night 7 PM-7 AM, returns with a fare): 1.50 €/km
  • Tariff D (night, returns empty): 3.00 €/km

For the 8 km airport-to-center trip, this works out to roughly 12-21 € by day and 15-27 € at night — a legal ceiling, so actual metered fares should fall at or under this. These are maximum tariffs set annually; confirm the current rate before you travel.

Hidden costs

  • Shuttle + tram is one combined ticket at 3 € — no need to buy two
  • Taxi luggage: No extra charge for luggage in the trunk unless it needs external equipment (from the 1st bag) or you're carrying more than 3 bags per person from the 4th onward (2 € each, per the préfecture's 2026 tariff)
  • 5th passenger: 4 € supplement per the same tariff
  • Tipping: Not expected in French taxis. Rounding up is polite but optional.
