Getting from Montpellier Airport with kids and family

Last updated: March 2026

Montpellier Airport is small, simple, and just 8 km from the city — one of the easier airport transfers for families in France.

Child seat situation in France

French law requires child restraints for children under 10 or under 135 cm. In practice:

  • Taxis: Legally exempt, but it's not safe for young children without proper restraints.
  • Shuttle bus/tram: No child seats needed on public transport.
  • Pre-booked transfer: Child seats available on request. Best option for young children.

The shuttle bus with kids

The shuttle bus (Ligne 620) is manageable for families with older kids:

  • Comfortable seats with space for a stroller in the luggage area
  • 15-20 minutes to Place de l'Europe, then a tram to the center
  • Kids under 4 ride free on the bus; under 6 free on the tram
The catch: connecting from bus to tram with luggage, a stroller, and tired kids is doable but not relaxing. For the price difference (4 € vs 28 €), many families choose the taxi.

Best option by family situation

| Situation | Best option | Cost | Why | |---|---|---|---| | 2 adults + small child | Transfer with child seat | €25-35 | Safety + door-to-door | | Family with older kids (5+) | Taxi | 25-32 € | Quick, easy, 10 min ride | | Budget family | Shuttle + tram | ~8 € total | Very cheap, manageable | | Large family (5+) | Van transfer | €35-50 | Space for everyone | | Going to the beach | Transfer | €40-55 | Fixed price, no stress |

Why the 8 km distance is great for families

The short distance means even the worst-case scenario (traffic, wrong turn) is only 20 minutes in a car. Kids barely have time to get restless. Compare this to airports like CDG (40 km) or KLIA (55 km) — Montpellier is a breeze.

Practical tips

  • The airport is tiny. From plane to exit in 10 minutes. No long walks, no terminal trains.
  • Summer heat: Montpellier gets very hot (35°C+) in July-August. Have water and sun protection for kids.
  • Heading to the beach? La Grande-Motte and Palavas-les-Flots are popular family beaches, 15-25 km from the airport. A transfer or taxi is the only practical option — no direct public transport.
  • Stroller at the airport: The terminal is fully accessible. No stairs between arrivals and ground transport.
  • Baby changing: Available in terminal restrooms. Basic baby supplies at the airport pharmacy.
