Bandaranaike International Airport to Colombo — What You Actually Need to Know

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) sits in Katunayake, roughly 35 km north of Colombo. The fastest route uses the E03 Colombo–Katunayake Expressway and takes around 40–50 minutes in normal traffic. During Colombo rush hours (7:30–9:30 AM and 4:30–7:00 PM), the old Negombo Road alternative can stretch to 90 minutes or more. The airport runs its own taxi service at published, fixed rates — LKR 8,100 to Colombo 01 (Fort) in an air-conditioned car — so you can know the price before you land. Ride-hailing apps and pre-booked transfers set their own prices, which are not published in advance.

CMB has a single international terminal. After clearing immigration and collecting luggage, you walk through the customs corridor into the arrivals hall. Money changers sit immediately to your left — rates are acceptable but not the best in the country. SIM card counters from Dialog, Mobitel, and Hutch are right there as well; tourist SIM bundles are sold at the counter and the operators change the packages regularly, so compare what each is offering on the day.

The arrivals hall has a small café and ATMs from Commercial Bank and Sampath Bank. Both accept Visa and Mastercard. Once you step outside, the heat and humidity hit immediately — Colombo is tropical year-round.

The exit doors lead to a covered pickup area. Pre-booked transfer drivers wait here with name boards. The taxi counter is to the right, and ride-hailing pickup is in the same zone.

The airport publishes the whole taxi rate card by destination, plus LKR 130 per extra kilometre beyond the destination you asked for and LKR 300 per extra drop. Rates are revised periodically — check the airport's taxi page before travelling.

The expressway toll is LKR 400 for an ordinary car (Road Development Authority, gazetted 17 December 2025). It is usually included in transfer prices but not always in ride-hailing fares. Ask before you get in.

PickMe is the dominant ride-hailing app in Sri Lanka and generally more reliable than Uber here. However, availability at the airport can be spotty late at night.

Add LKR 130 per extra kilometre beyond your stated destination and LKR 300 per extra drop. These rates come from the airport operator and are revised from time to time, so treat the card on the airport's site as the live version.

We deliberately do not print figures for PickMe, Uber or private transfers: none of them publishes a tariff, and a made-up range that looks freshly checked is worse than no number at all.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Rounding up is a kind gesture. Drivers on long routes to Kandy or Sigiriya genuinely appreciate tips since fuel costs are high.

Many international flights land at CMB between 10 PM and 3 AM. The airport stays operational around the clock, and more of your options survive the night than most guides suggest.

The Route 187 bus to Colombo Fort runs 24 hours a day at the published LKR 325 per passenger — it does not stop at 10 PM. PickMe and Uber drivers do thin out after midnight, and you might wait 20–30 minutes or find no one at all. The airport taxi counter is open around the clock; its rate card is published per destination, and we have seen no published night surcharge on it, so ask at the counter rather than assuming one.

A pre-booked transfer is the safest bet for late arrivals. Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts for delays. If your flight lands at 2 AM, you want someone already waiting — not an app search in the dark.

Negombo is only 10 km away and has hotels in every price range. If you arrive very late and Colombo is not urgent, staying one night in Negombo and continuing in the morning is a practical choice.

CMB handles families reasonably well. Luggage trolleys are free and available after baggage claim. The walk from arrivals to the vehicle pickup is short and covered.

If you are traveling with small children, request a child seat when booking your transfer — most Sri Lankan taxis do not carry them by default. Pre-booked services can arrange this with advance notice.

For groups with more than 3 large suitcases, a standard sedan will not work. Book a van or minibus — a Toyota HiAce or similar carries up to 8 passengers with luggage. The airport's published rate card covers its air-conditioned cars; van pricing is agreed at the counter or quoted upfront by a transfer company, so ask for the figure before you commit rather than relying on a number printed here.

Pre-booked transfer drivers wait in the arrivals hall just past customs, holding a name board. Some services send a photo of the driver and the vehicle plate number via WhatsApp or SMS before your arrival.

If you cannot find your driver, step outside and look to the right — there is a secondary waiting area. Airport Wi-Fi is free but unreliable. Having your driver's local phone number saved offline is important.

The official taxi counter is inside the arrivals hall on the right side. You pay at the counter, receive a slip, and walk to the assigned vehicle outside. This avoids haggling.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: you arrive late at night, travel with family, have lots of luggage, or simply want zero hassle after a long flight.

Choose the airport taxi counter if: you arrive during daytime, travel light, and are comfortable with the process.

Choose PickMe/Uber if: you have a working local SIM, arrive during daytime hours, and want the cheapest option.

Choose the airport bus if: you travel solo with a small bag and are budget-conscious. It runs 24 hours, so a late landing does not rule it out.

The expressway has made the CMB-to-Colombo journey fast and predictable. The main variable is not the road but the reliability of your ride at the airport end.
