Arriving at Colombo Airport Late at Night — Your Real Options

Last updated: March 2026

A significant number of international flights land at Bandaranaike Airport between 10 PM and 3 AM. The airport handles these arrivals smoothly, but your onward transport options narrow considerably after dark.

What is still running after midnight

| Option | Available? | Notes | |--------|-----------|-------| | Airport taxi counter | Yes, 24 hours | Fares 10–15% higher after midnight | | Pre-booked transfer | Yes, 24 hours | Same price as daytime, driver tracks your flight | | PickMe / Uber | Unreliable | Very few drivers after midnight, long waits likely | | Airport bus (Route 187) | No | Last bus around 10 PM | | Hotel shuttle | Sometimes | Only luxury hotels, must arrange in advance |

The real problem with late-night arrivals

The airport itself is fine — it stays lit, staffed, and operational. Immigration can be slow if multiple flights land together, so clearing the terminal at 1 AM might take 30–45 minutes.

The problem starts at the pickup zone. Ride-hailing apps show few or no drivers. The taxi counter has vehicles, but the selection is limited and you cannot be picky about vehicle condition. If you are a family or group needing a van, availability is not guaranteed.

A pre-booked transfer removes all of this uncertainty. The driver monitors your flight, arrives when you land (not when your flight was scheduled), and waits regardless of immigration delays.

Safety considerations

Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists, including at night. The airport road is well-lit and the expressway is straightforward. That said, avoid accepting rides from unofficial drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Use the official taxi counter or your pre-booked service.

Keep your accommodation address written down or saved offline. Airport Wi-Fi exists but is unreliable, and your foreign SIM may not work until you buy a local one.

The Negombo alternative

If reaching Colombo at 2 AM does not serve any practical purpose, consider staying in Negombo for the night. It is only 10 km from the airport — a 15-minute drive costing around LKR 2,000–3,500 (EUR 6–10). Hotels like Jetwing Blue, Heritance Negombo, and dozens of guesthouses welcome late check-ins.

You can continue to Colombo or elsewhere in the morning, rested and in daylight.

What to do if everything fails

If you arrive and genuinely cannot find transport, the airport has a few options. There are seating areas in the arrivals hall. The small cafe operates extended hours. Some travelers wait until 5–6 AM when transport options resume fully. This is not ideal but it is safe — the terminal is staffed and secure around the clock.
