Getting from Colombo Airport to the City with Kids and Family

Last updated: March 2026

Bandaranaike International Airport is manageable with children, but Sri Lanka's transport system does not cater to families by default. A little preparation makes a big difference.

Inside the terminal

After clearing immigration and baggage claim, the walk to the arrivals hall is short and on one level. Luggage trolleys are free and available at the baggage carousels. There are basic restroom facilities before you exit customs, but no dedicated family or baby-changing rooms in the arrivals area.

The arrivals hall has a small cafe and seating. If you need to regroup, feed a baby, or reorganize luggage, this is the place to do it before heading outside. The terminal is air-conditioned — once you step outside, the tropical heat is immediate.

Child seats

This is the critical point. Standard taxis and ride-hailing vehicles in Sri Lanka do not carry child seats. If you need one, you must book a private transfer and request it in advance. Most transfer services can provide a child seat for children up to 4 years old if given at least 24 hours notice.

For older children (4–12), booster seats are harder to find. If this is important to you, consider bringing a portable booster seat in your luggage.

Vehicle sizes for families

| Family Size | Recommended Vehicle | Price to Colombo (LKR) | Price (EUR) | |-------------|-------------------|----------------------|-------------| | 2 adults + 1–2 kids | Sedan (Toyota Axio) | 6,000–8,000 | 18–24 | | 2 adults + 2–3 kids + luggage | Minivan (Toyota Noah) | 8,000–10,000 | 24–30 | | Large family / group | Van (Toyota HiAce) | 9,000–12,000 | 27–36 |

A standard sedan fits 2 large suitcases and 1 carry-on in the trunk. If you travel with a stroller, car seat, and multiple bags, you need at minimum a minivan.

Practical tips for families

Buy water inside the terminal. The arrivals hall has a small shop. Staying hydrated matters — Colombo is hot and humid year-round, and the car AC needs a few minutes to cool down.

Get a SIM card before leaving. If your phone works, you can contact your driver and navigate. Dialog offers tourist SIMs at the counter in arrivals for about LKR 1,500 (EUR 4.50).

Consider Negombo for the first night. If your flight arrives late and the children are exhausted, Negombo is only 10 km from the airport with family-friendly hotels. The drive to Colombo can wait until morning.

Book the transfer, not the taxi. With children, the taxi counter adds friction — you carry bags, manage kids, and find the vehicle in the heat. A transfer driver meets you inside with a name board, helps with luggage, and walks you to a pre-cooled car. The extra LKR 500–1,500 is well spent.
