Bergen Airport Flesland to the city: what you actually need to know

Bergen Airport Flesland is 16 km south of Bergen city centre — Avinor puts the drive at about 18 minutes in normal traffic. The Bybanen light rail connects the airport to the city centre in about 45 minutes for NOK 51 (Skyss adult single, one zone, from 1 February 2026). It is the best option for most travellers. Taxis are quicker but priced by each operator individually — you see the price before you accept the trip at the terminal kiosks. Pre-booked transfers are fixed when you book. The Bybanen has taken over from the old Flybussen airport coach as the main public link.

Bergen Airport handles both domestic and international flights. For Schengen arrivals, there is no immigration check. You walk off the plane and head straight to baggage claim. For non-Schengen flights, passport control is efficient. Norway is not in the EU but is in the Schengen Area, so EU/EEA passport holders can use e-gates.

Baggage claim is compact and typically fast. The terminal was expanded in 2017 and is modern, clean, and well-signed in Norwegian and English. After collecting your bags, the exit leads into the arrivals hall where you find the light rail station, taxi rank, and rental car desks all within a short walk. The Bybanen light rail stop is directly connected to the terminal building.

Bybanen light rail is the default choice and the one most locals use. Line 1 runs from the airport to the city centre (Byparken stop) in about 45 minutes, with departures every 5-10 minutes during the day. Skyss prices a single ticket for one zone — which is what the airport-to-centre trip is — at NOK 51 for an adult and NOK 26 for a child aged 6-17, valid for 60 minutes, with prices set on 1 February 2026. Buy from the machine at the platform or on the Skyss app before boarding; there is no ticket office and no sales on board. Inspectors check regularly and travelling without a valid ticket carries a fine — check the current amount with Skyss.

Taxis line up outside the arrivals hall, and the ride to the centre is short: 16 km, about 18 minutes in normal traffic. Norway deregulated its taxi market in 2020, so there is no single Bergen taxi tariff — each company sets its own rates, and seven of them serve Flesland (Bergen Taxi, Norgestaxi, Christiania Taxi, Taxi1, A-Taxi, Bergen Airport Taxi and 7 Fjell Taxi). That sounds worse than it is, because Avinor has built the fix into the terminal: book from the Fast Travel kiosks (there are five, in the domestic arrivals area and at the taxi stand), scan the QR code, and you see the price before you accept the trip. Drivers are required to tell you the fixed price before the journey begins. Check the quote rather than assuming, and compare kiosks if you want — that is the whole point of them.

Pre-booked private transfers offer a price fixed at the time of booking, with a driver meeting you in arrivals. This is useful for groups or when you want the number settled before you fly rather than at the kiosk.

Rental cars are available from desks in the arrivals hall. Driving in Bergen is straightforward but parking in the city centre is expensive and limited. The light rail makes a car unnecessary if you are staying in the centre.

Airport bus (Flybussen) has largely given way to the Bybanen light rail. Check current schedules if you have a specific destination not on the light rail route.

Transport from Bergen Airport Flesland to the city centre (16 km):

Only one of those numbers is a published tariff, so it is the only one we print. The light rail fare comes straight from Skyss, the operator. Taxi fares in Norway have been deregulated since 2020 and differ from company to company, which is precisely why Avinor puts the price on a screen before you commit — read it there.

Norway is expensive, and airport taxis reflect that. The light rail is genuinely excellent value by Norwegian standards.

The Bybanen light rail runs until approximately midnight on weekdays and slightly later on weekends. After that, there is no service until about 5:30 AM. If your flight lands after the last light rail departure, your options are taxi or pre-booked transfer. Taxis are available at all hours; operators charge more at night, and the kiosk will show you what before you accept. A pre-booked transfer guarantees availability and a price fixed in advance. The terminal remains accessible but has very limited overnight facilities.

The Bybanen is spacious and has designated luggage areas and space for strollers. It is entirely accessible. Families with moderate luggage can use it comfortably. However, with very young children, heavy luggage, and a 45-minute ride, a taxi or transfer offers a more direct and comfortable option. Child seats are not standard in Norwegian taxis but can be requested. Pre-booked transfers can provide child seats if arranged in advance. The airport terminal is fully accessible with elevators and step-free access throughout.

Book from one of the Fast Travel kiosks — five of them, in the domestic arrivals area and at the taxi stand — and scan the QR code to see your trip details and price before you accept. The Bybanen platform is connected to the terminal via a covered walkway. Follow the signs for "Bybanen" from the arrivals hall. Pre-booked transfer drivers typically wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign near the exit. The terminal is compact and well-signed, so finding any transport option is straightforward.

Choose the Bybanen light rail if you want the best value, are travelling reasonably light, and your destination is along the line (most central hotels are). If you are an adult travelling with children, it is better value still — see below.

Choose a taxi if you have heavy luggage, are in a group of 3-4 sharing the cost, or your hotel is not near a Bybanen stop.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if you are arriving late at night, want a fixed price, need child seats, or are heading outside Bergen centre (e.g., to the fjords or a cruise terminal).

Choose the Bybanen even if it takes longer because the 45-minute ride goes through pleasant scenery and is a gentle introduction to Bergen.
