Marthas Vineyard Airport (MVY) Transfer Guide

Marthas Vineyard Airport is a small regional airport located in West Tisbury, roughly in the center of the island. Vineyard Haven is about 10 minutes away, Edgartown is about 15 minutes, and Oak Bluffs is about 12 minutes by car. There is no public transit from the airport. Your options are taxi, pre-booked transfer, rental car, or a ride from whoever is expecting you. Expect to pay $15-35 by taxi depending on your destination.

MVY is a small, single-terminal airport that handles mostly regional turboprop and small jet flights. You walk from the plane across the tarmac and into a modest terminal building. Baggage is typically delivered to a small claim area or sometimes brought out on a cart. The whole process is informal compared to major airports. There are no long corridors, no shuttles between terminals, and no confusion about where to go. You collect your bags and walk outside within minutes of landing.

Taxi: Taxis serve the airport but availability fluctuates. During summer peak season (June-September), demand outstrips supply and you may wait 20-30 minutes or longer. Off-season, fewer taxis operate on the island. Fares run $15-35 depending on where you are going.

Rental car: Available at the airport from a few local agencies. During summer, cars book out weeks in advance. Reserve early if you want one. The island is small enough that a car is convenient but not always necessary.

VTA bus: The Vineyard Transit Authority runs seasonal bus routes around the island, but there is no dedicated airport route. Some buses pass near the airport on West Tisbury Road, but service is infrequent and not designed for airport arrivals with luggage.

Hotel pickup: Some hotels and inns on the island offer pickup service for guests. Check with your accommodation before arriving. This is more common at upscale properties.

Marthas Vineyard is an expensive destination, and transport prices reflect that. A taxi from MVY to Vineyard Haven runs about $15-20. To Edgartown, expect $20-30. To Aquinnah (the far western tip), fares can reach $35-45. Pre-booked transfers are similarly priced but offer the advantage of guaranteed availability. The island is small, so distances are short, but per-mile costs are higher than on the mainland.

MVY has very limited flight operations after dark. Most flights arrive during daytime and early evening hours. If you do arrive in the evening, taxi availability drops sharply. There is effectively no late-night transport infrastructure on the island. If your flight lands after sunset, arrange a pickup in advance, either through a pre-booked transfer or your accommodation. Do not assume you will find a taxi waiting.

The small terminal and short walk from plane to car make MVY easy for families in terms of logistics. The challenge is getting a vehicle. With children, car seats, beach gear, and vacation luggage, you need to know your ride is waiting. Pre-booking a transfer with a child seat request, or having a rental car reserved, solves this. Showing up and hoping for a taxi with enough room for a family's summer luggage is risky, especially in peak season.

The airport is small enough that there is essentially one place to meet anyone. Walk out of the terminal and the small parking area and pickup zone is directly in front of you. Pre-booked transfer drivers will be waiting in or near the parking lot, often with a name sign. Taxis queue in the same area. There is no complex navigation required.

Choose a taxi if: You are arriving during shoulder season or off-peak hours when taxis are more available, traveling light, and heading to a nearby town like Vineyard Haven.

Choose a rental car if: You plan to explore the island during your stay. Book well in advance for summer visits.
