Bergen Airport: Bybanen, taxi, or pre-booked transfer?

Last updated: April 2026

Bergen Airport Flesland has three practical options: the Bybanen light rail, a taxi, or a pre-booked transfer. Here is when each one makes sense.

When the Bybanen wins

For solo travellers or couples with standard luggage, the Bybanen is the obvious choice. The price difference is enormous. The ride is comfortable, with modern trams, free Wi-Fi, and views of the Bergen suburbs. The Byparken stop in the centre is steps from Bryggen and most hotels. The 45-minute journey is longer than a taxi, but you avoid any price anxiety and contribute to Bergen's excellent public transport.

When a taxi makes sense

A taxi saves 15-20 minutes and goes directly to your door. This matters if your hotel is not near a Bybanen stop, or if you have heavy luggage that would be awkward on public transport. For groups of 3-4, the per-person cost drops to roughly NOK 115-175 / EUR 10-15, which narrows the gap with the Bybanen. Bergen taxis are metered, professional, and reliable.

When a pre-booked transfer is worth it

Pre-booked transfers serve a specific niche at Bergen Airport:

  • Late night arrivals when the Bybanen has stopped and you want a guaranteed car
  • Families with child seats that need to be arranged in advance
  • Groups heading outside Bergen to fjord destinations, Voss, or Hardanger where the price is agreed upfront
  • Business travellers who want certainty and receipt documentation

The price is similar to a taxi, sometimes slightly higher, but you get a fixed fare with no meter-related surprises and a driver who is waiting specifically for you.

The Bergen verdict

Bergen is one of the airports where public transport genuinely competes with private options. The Bybanen is modern, frequent, and absurdly cheap by Norwegian standards. Unless you have a specific reason to need a car, take the tram.
