Ohrid Airport: Taxi or Private Transfer?

Last updated: April 2026

At Ohrid Airport, the taxi versus transfer debate is less about price and more about whether transport will be there at all. Here is the full picture.

The Availability Problem

This is the single most important factor. Ohrid Airport is small. There is no permanent taxi rank with a rotating fleet of waiting cars. A few taxis show up when flights are expected, and they leave once passengers are served. When a charter flight of 150+ people lands, those few taxis disappear in minutes. If you are near the back of the immigration queue, there may be nothing left. A private transfer eliminates this risk entirely — your driver is assigned and waiting.

Price Comparison

Taxi to Ohrid center: no published fare — whatever the meter reads, or whatever you agree at the rank. Private transfer to Ohrid center: $20-$35, fixed at booking. The transfer usually costs somewhat more. For that premium you get guaranteed availability, a driver with your name on a sign, flight tracking, and a price confirmed before you fly. At an airport where the alternative might be standing in a parking lot with no transport, the premium is hard to argue against.

Communication

Taxi drivers in Ohrid generally speak Macedonian and possibly Albanian. Some speak basic English or German (from the tourist trade). If you have your hotel name and address written down, communication is usually fine. Private transfer drivers working airport routes handle English bookings regularly and have your destination details in advance.

Reliability by Time of Day

During daytime arrivals of scheduled flights, taxis are reasonably available. The risk is low for a midday arrival on a small plane. For charter arrivals (especially evenings and weekends in summer), taxi availability drops sharply. For any arrival after 7 PM, taxis become genuinely unreliable. Private transfers are equally reliable at all hours.

For Groups

If you are traveling with 3-4 people, a single private transfer sedan costs $20-$35 total and keeps everyone together; two taxis mean two separately negotiated fares. For groups of 5+, a minivan transfer ($35-$50) is the obvious choice since you would need multiple taxis otherwise.

The Honest Recommendation

If you are arriving on a scheduled flight in the middle of the day with light luggage and a flexible schedule, you can reasonably take your chances with a taxi. For every other scenario — charter flights, evening arrivals, family travel, group travel, heavy luggage, or simply wanting certainty — book a private transfer. The cost difference is small and the peace of mind is significant.
