Ohrid Airport Transfers for Families with Children

Ohrid is a wonderful family destination — a UNESCO-protected lake town with beaches, history, and affordable dining. Getting from the airport to your hotel with kids just requires a little planning.

The Airport

Ohrid Airport is one of the smallest you will encounter in Europe. One building, one exit, no confusion. With children, this is a genuine advantage. There are no shuttle trains, no terminal changes, no long corridors. You walk off the plane, through a small terminal, collect your bags, and you are outside. The entire process takes 15-25 minutes.

The Challenge

The challenge is not the airport — it is what is outside. A small parking area, a few taxis (maybe), and a road leading to town. If you arrive on a busy charter flight with 150 other families, the taxi situation can become chaotic. Standing in a parking lot with tired kids, bags, and no confirmed ride is exactly the kind of stress you traveled to Ohrid to escape. Book transport before you fly.

Best Option for Families

A private transfer is the clear choice. Your driver is there when you walk out, helps with bags, and drives you to your door in 10-15 minutes. Child seats can be requested at booking. The cost ($20-$35) is negligible relative to your total trip expense. Some hotels also offer airport shuttles — ask when reserving your room.

Child Seats

North Macedonian law requires child restraints for children under 5. Private transfer services provide appropriate seats on request. Taxis do not carry child seats and are not reliably available anyway. If your child is between 5 and 12, a booster seat is recommended even if not strictly required by law. Specify your child's age and weight when booking so the correct equipment is ready.

The Drive to Ohrid

The 9 km ride from the airport to town takes about 10-15 minutes on a straightforward road. As you approach Ohrid, you will catch your first glimpse of the lake — a beautiful blue expanse surrounded by mountains. It is a nice moment for the whole family and a good distraction for restless kids.

Luggage and Strollers

A standard sedan fits 2-3 large suitcases. Families with a stroller, beach equipment, and multiple bags should request a larger vehicle — a minivan costs only slightly more ($30-$45) and avoids the squeeze. Mention your stroller when booking so the driver knows to expect it.

Practical Tips for Families in Ohrid

Ohrid is very child-friendly. The lake has gentle beaches suitable for small children. Restaurants welcome families and portions are generous. Prices are low by European standards — a family dinner for four runs $25-$40. The Old Town is walkable but has cobblestones, so a lightweight stroller handles better than a large travel system. If you are staying on the lakefront, most of what you need is within walking distance.
