Male Velana Airport (MLE) Transfer Guide

Velana International Airport sits on Hulhule Island, a separate island from Male city. Getting anywhere in the Maldives after landing requires a boat or seaplane. A speedboat transfer to Male city takes 10 minutes and costs $2-5 on the public ferry or $25-50 by private speedboat. Reaching your resort depends entirely on which atoll it is in. Nearby resorts use speedboats ($100-300 per person), distant atolls require seaplanes ($300-600 per person), and some require domestic flights plus another boat. The Maldives is unlike almost any other airport transfer situation in the world. There are no roads connecting the airport to your final destination.

After clearing immigration and customs at Velana, you exit into the arrivals hall. It can feel chaotic, especially when multiple international flights land close together. Representatives from resorts and transfer companies will be holding signs with guest names. If you have a resort booking, your transfer is almost always pre-arranged by the resort itself.

If you are heading to Male city or a guesthouse on a local island, you will need to find the ferry terminal or arrange a speedboat. The public ferry terminal is a short walk from the airport. For seaplane transfers, you will be directed to the seaplane terminal, which is adjacent to the main terminal.

Important: seaplanes do not fly after dark. If your flight arrives after approximately 3:30 PM, you may need to spend a night near the airport or in Male before catching a seaplane the next morning.

Private speedboat to Male: Costs $25-50 for a dedicated boat. Faster and available on your schedule, useful if you are arriving late or have a lot of luggage.

Resort speedboat transfer: Most resorts in North and South Male Atoll arrange speedboat transfers directly. Cost ranges from $100-300 per person round trip. The resort coordinates everything.

Seaplane transfer: For resorts in more distant atolls like Ari, Baa, or Dhaalu. Operated primarily by Maldivian (formerly TMA). Costs $300-600 per person round trip. Only operates during daylight hours, roughly 6 AM to 3:30 PM for departures.

Domestic flight plus speedboat: For the most distant atolls, you fly domestically to a regional airport and then take a speedboat to your resort. This is arranged by the resort.

Private transfer to Male hotels/guesthouses: A dedicated speedboat and vehicle arrangement, handling everything from airport to hotel door. Costs $40-80 depending on the service.

The Maldives transfer system is expensive by global standards. Here is what to expect:

• Male city (ferry): $2 per person
• Male city (private speedboat): $25-50 per boat
• North Male Atoll resorts: $100-200 per person (speedboat)
• South Male Atoll resorts: $150-250 per person (speedboat)
• Ari Atoll resorts: $350-500 per person (seaplane)

Many international flights arrive in Male late at night or in the early hours. This creates a real logistical problem. Seaplanes do not fly after dark. The public ferry to Male stops around 11:30 PM. If your resort requires a seaplane and you arrive after 3 PM, you will almost certainly need to overnight near the airport or in Male.

Some resorts arrange this automatically, putting you in a transit hotel and scheduling your seaplane for the next morning. Others leave it to you. Check with your resort before traveling. For speedboat resorts, late-night transfers are sometimes available but cost more and need to be arranged specifically.

Traveling with children in the Maldives transfer system requires planning. Seaplanes have strict luggage limits, typically 20-25 kg per person with limited cabin space. Excess luggage can sometimes follow on a later flight but this needs to be arranged.

Speedboats in open ocean can be rough, especially during the southwest monsoon season (May to October). Young children and elderly travelers should be aware of this. Life jackets are provided but the ride can be bumpy and wet.

For families, the airport has a reasonable waiting area, and the seaplane terminal has a lounge. If you are overnighting before a morning seaplane, some transit hotels offer family rooms. Pack essentials in your carry-on since checked bags sometimes arrive on a different speedboat or seaplane than you do.

At Velana, your transfer representative will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name or your resort name. For resort transfers, look for the resort's branded counter or representative in the arrivals area. For private transfers to Male, the driver or boat captain will coordinate via phone or WhatsApp.

If you are taking the public ferry, exit the airport terminal and follow signs to the ferry terminal, which is a five-minute walk. Ferries to Male depart from the clearly marked jetty.

Book a private speedboat to Male if: you are staying in a Male guesthouse, arriving late, or have heavy luggage and want door-to-door service.

Take the public ferry if: you are heading to Male city during daytime, traveling light, and comfortable navigating on your own.

Arrange an overnight near the airport if: your flight arrives after 3 PM and your resort requires a seaplane transfer. Do not leave this to chance.
