Ohrid Airport Transfers: What You Actually Need to Know

Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport is a small airport about 9 km from Ohrid town center. The drive takes 10-15 minutes. There is no public bus service from the airport. Your options are a pre-booked private transfer ($20-$35), a taxi ($10-$20), or a hotel shuttle if your accommodation offers one. This is a tiny airport with very limited ground transport infrastructure, so booking something in advance is strongly recommended, especially for charter flight arrivals when dozens of passengers compete for a handful of taxis.

Ohrid Airport has one small terminal building. It handles a mix of seasonal charter flights (mostly from Western Europe during summer) and limited year-round scheduled services. The terminal is basic but functional. Immigration for non-EU arrivals is straightforward and quick — lines rarely exceed 15 minutes even when a charter lands. Baggage claim has one or two carousels. The entire process from landing to exiting the terminal takes 15-25 minutes. Once outside, you are in a small parking area with a road leading to the main highway. The surroundings are rural — fields and hills. There are no shops, restaurants, or services outside the terminal.

Taxi: A small number of taxis wait outside the terminal, but availability is unpredictable. When a charter flight of 150+ passengers lands, taxis are overwhelmed in minutes. When a small scheduled flight arrives, there may be a few cabs. The fare to Ohrid center is approximately 600-1,000 MKD ($10-$18). Make sure the driver uses the meter or agree on a price before getting in.

Hotel Shuttle: Some hotels and guesthouses in Ohrid offer airport pickup as part of their service or for a small fee. Ask your accommodation when booking — many are happy to arrange it, especially the larger hotels. This is often the simplest solution if available.

Car Rental: Very limited at Ohrid Airport. A few international agencies occasionally have desks open for charter arrivals, but do not count on walk-up availability. Book well in advance if you want a rental car.

Public Bus: There is no regular bus service connecting the airport to Ohrid town. Do not plan around this.

Ohrid is affordable. A taxi to the town center runs 600-1,000 MKD ($10-$18). A private transfer costs $20-$35. If your hotel offers a shuttle, it might be free or around 500-1,000 MKD. For trips beyond Ohrid — to Struga (20 km), Bitola (70 km), or Skopje (170 km) — private transfers cost $25-$40, $60-$90, and $100-$160 respectively. North Macedonia is one of the most affordable countries in Europe for transport. Tipping is appreciated but not expected — rounding up or adding 10% is generous.

Charter flights sometimes arrive late in the evening or even after midnight due to delays. When this happens, the limited transport at Ohrid Airport becomes even more limited. There may be one or two taxis waiting, or none at all. The airport area is dark and quiet with no nearby services. A pre-booked private transfer is essential for any arrival after 7 PM. Your driver will wait regardless of delays and you avoid the risk of being stranded at a rural airport with no transport and no nearby town.

The airport is tiny and easy to navigate with children — there is essentially one path from the plane to the exit. No escalators, no train connections, no confusion. The challenge is what happens outside. If taxis are scarce and you are standing in a parking lot with kids and bags, it is frustrating. A pre-booked transfer with space for luggage and an optional child seat eliminates this. The drive to Ohrid is short and scenic — you will see the lake as you approach town, which is a nice first impression.

For pre-booked transfers, drivers wait just outside the terminal exit in the small parking area. With only one exit for arriving passengers, you cannot miss each other. Drivers usually hold a sign with your name. The area is compact enough that your driver will see you as soon as you walk out. Phone reception is generally good if you need to call, and the airport has basic WiFi.

Choose a taxi if: you are arriving on a small scheduled flight during the day and are confident a few taxis will be waiting. Check before you land if possible.

Choose a hotel shuttle if: your accommodation offers one. Ask when booking your stay — many Ohrid hotels provide this service.

Do not plan on: public buses (they do not exist from the airport), walk-up car rentals (very limited), or rideshare apps (minimal coverage in Ohrid).
