Tobago Airport Transfer Guide: Getting to Your Hotel

Tobago's A.N.R. Robinson International Airport (TAB) is located at Crown Point, at the southwestern tip of the island. Most hotels and resorts are within 10-45 minutes by car. There is no public bus from the airport. Taxis are the standard option, with fixed rates: TTD 60-100 (roughly USD 9-15) to Crown Point hotels, and TTD 200-400 (USD 30-60) to the Scarborough or Plymouth area. Pre-booked private transfers cost slightly more but come with a guaranteed vehicle and meet-and-greet.

TAB is a small airport with a single terminal. After landing, you walk across the tarmac or through a jet bridge into the arrivals area. Immigration can be slow when multiple flights land close together, particularly when seasonal charters from Europe arrive alongside Caribbean Air services. Budget 20-40 minutes to clear immigration and collect luggage.

Once through customs, you exit into a small arrivals hall. There are a couple of car rental desks and a tourism information counter. Outside the doors, you are immediately in the warm Tobago air with taxi drivers ready to offer rides.

Maxi Taxi (Shared Minibus) -- Tobago's informal public transport. These run fixed routes but not on fixed schedules. They do not serve the airport directly, but you can walk to the main road (about 5 minutes) and flag one down. This is cheap (a few TTD) but impractical with luggage and unreliable for timing.

Pre-booked Private Transfer -- A driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. The vehicle is confirmed in advance, and the price is fixed. This is particularly useful if you are staying at a more remote resort on the north or east coast, where finding a taxi willing to make the trip can take negotiation.

Rental Car -- A few rental agencies operate from the airport. Driving in Tobago is on the left. Roads range from decent main routes to narrow, hilly back roads. If you plan to explore the island, a rental car makes sense, but for airport-to-hotel transport alone, it is usually not necessary.

Prices are per vehicle, not per person. The TTD to USD exchange rate fluctuates, so these USD figures are approximate. Always confirm the fare in TTD before departing.

Some flights, particularly charters and connections from Trinidad, arrive in the evening or after dark. The airport is operational but quieter. Taxis are still available for evening flights, but the number of drivers drops off significantly after 9-10 PM.

If your flight arrives late, do not count on finding a taxi easily. A pre-booked transfer ensures someone is waiting. Tobago roads are poorly lit outside the main towns, and driving an unfamiliar route at night without local knowledge is best avoided.

Taxis at TAB vary in condition and size. If you are a family with multiple bags, ask the driver before loading up whether everything fits. There is no formal queue system, so you may need to look at a few vehicles before finding one that works.

Child car seats are not standard in Tobago taxis. If you need one, a pre-booked transfer is the way to arrange it. Specify the child's age at booking. For families heading to remote resorts, the fixed pricing and confirmed vehicle of a private transfer avoids the stress of negotiating with multiple drivers at the airport.

For pre-booked transfers, the driver is typically waiting just outside the arrivals exit or inside the small arrivals hall with a name sign. Given the airport's size, there is really only one exit, so finding your driver is straightforward.

Taxi drivers congregate outside the arrivals doors. They may approach you as you exit. This is normal in Tobago and not aggressive, but you should confirm the fare before agreeing to a ride. If the price seems high, you can check the official rate board inside the terminal.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: You are heading to the north or east coast, arriving late, traveling with family and luggage, or prefer to have everything arranged before you land.

Choose a rental car if: You plan to explore Tobago independently during your stay. But for just the airport-to-hotel leg, a taxi or transfer is simpler.
