Punta Cana Airport to your resort: what you actually need to know

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the busiest airport in the Caribbean, handling mostly resort-bound tourists. There is no public transit connecting the airport to the hotel zones. Your options are a pre-booked private transfer, shared shuttle, or taxi. Most resorts are 15-45 minutes away. The official airport taxi association posts fixed one-way fares by hotel -- from USD 10 (Hotel Sheraton, close to the airport) up to USD 80 (Sivory/Zoetry, at the far end of the strip), with most Bavaro hotels in the USD 20-40 band (Asociacion de Taxistas Turistico de Beron Bavaro, rate sheet posted at puntacanainternationalairport.com). PUJ has two terminals. Terminal A handles a handful of domestic and regional flights. Terminal B handles the bulk of international arrivals. After stepping off the plane, you walk through open-air corridors into the immigration hall. The queues here can be significant. During peak season (December through April), when multiple flights from North America and Europe land simultaneously, waits of 30-60 minutes are common. The Dominican Republic does not require a separate tourist card purchase anymore — the fee is included in your airfare.

After immigration, you collect bags in a fairly compact baggage hall. Trolleys are available but sometimes scarce. Once through customs (usually a quick walk-through unless you are randomly selected), you emerge into the arrivals area. This is where it gets chaotic. You will be approached by numerous people offering taxis, tours, and timeshare presentations. Walk past them.

Pre-booked private transfer is how most visitors get to their resort. A driver meets you with a name sign in the arrivals hall, helps with luggage, and drives you directly to your hotel. Sedan and minivan prices vary by operator and exact resort -- get a quote when booking; expect a price in the same ballpark as the official taxi fare for your hotel (see below). The vehicles are air-conditioned and the ride is straightforward.

Shared shuttle services run to the main resort areas. You share a van with other passengers from the same flight. Per-person pricing is lower than a private transfer, but involves multiple stops -- if your resort is the last drop-off, the ride can take over an hour for what should be a 25-minute trip. Confirm the exact price with the operator before booking.

Taxis are available outside the terminal. Official airport taxis operate on fixed one-way rates posted by the taxi association (1-4 passengers, plus USD 20 per additional passenger) -- from USD 10 for hotels closest to the airport up to USD 80 for the farthest Bavaro properties, with most hotels in the USD 20-40 range. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and are not negotiable -- confirm your specific hotel's posted rate before getting in. Do not accept rides from anyone who approaches you inside the terminal.

Rental cars are available from agencies in the terminal. Roads in the Dominican Republic are functional but driving culture is aggressive. If you plan to stay at an all-inclusive resort, a rental car has limited value.

Resort shuttle — some all-inclusive packages include airport transfers. Check with your resort before booking separately.

Uvero Alto is not on the association's posted list -- confirm the fare with your driver or the taxi dispatch board before departing. Pre-booked private transfer and shared-shuttle prices are set by individual operators and vary -- get an exact quote when booking rather than relying on a fixed figure.

PUJ receives flights well into the night, especially from US cities. The airport stays operational, and transfers and taxis are available around the clock. Late-night arrivals (after 10 PM) are actually smoother in some ways — immigration lines are shorter and road traffic is almost nonexistent. The drive to Bavaro at midnight takes 20 minutes versus 30-40 during the day. Pre-booking a transfer is especially recommended for late arrivals, as the taxi situation outside becomes thinner and less organized after midnight.

Most visitors to Punta Cana are on week-long resort holidays, which means large suitcases. Private transfers and taxis handle luggage without issue — trunks are spacious and drivers are used to resort-sized bags. If you are travelling with a family, request a minivan transfer rather than squeezing into a sedan. Child car seats are not standard in Dominican taxis. Pre-booked transfer services can provide them if requested in advance. The walk from baggage claim to the vehicle pickup area is short and mostly covered.

After exiting customs, you enter a corridor lined with representatives holding name signs. Pre-booked transfer drivers and resort reps stand here. The area is busy but functional. Look for your name or the transfer company name. If you cannot find your driver, most transfer companies include a local phone number in the confirmation. Wi-Fi is available in the terminal (sometimes spotty). Taxis are outside the terminal building — follow signs or ask airport staff. Do not follow anyone who approaches you unsolicited inside.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if you want a fixed price, direct ride, and someone waiting for you when you land. This is the default recommendation for Punta Cana.

Choose a shared shuttle if you are a solo traveller or couple on a budget and do not mind a longer ride with multiple stops.

Choose a taxi if you did not pre-book anything and need a ride immediately. Confirm the price before departing.
