Arriving late at night at Punta Cana Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Punta Cana Airport receives flights throughout the evening and into the early morning hours, particularly from US and Canadian cities. A late arrival here is not unusual, and the airport is set up to handle it.

What the airport looks like late at night

Flights continue arriving until around midnight, with occasional charters landing later. The terminal stays operational as long as flights are coming in. Immigration is typically faster at night — fewer simultaneous arrivals mean shorter queues. Baggage claim and customs function normally. The arrivals corridor is quieter than during the daytime rush, but transfer drivers and some taxi operators are still present.

By 1-2 AM, the terminal becomes noticeably empty. Most shops and food outlets close. Lighting and air conditioning remain on.

Transport options after dark

Pre-booked transfers are the strongest option for late arrivals. Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts to delays. Even if you land at 2 AM, they are there. The ride to Bavaro at night is actually faster — 15-20 minutes with empty roads.

Taxis are available but in reduced numbers after midnight. The official taxi rank may have a few vehicles. Rates are the same as daytime (fixed posted prices). Finding an available taxi at 3 AM is not guaranteed.

Shared shuttles generally do not operate for very late flights. If your flight lands after 11 PM, do not rely on finding a shared shuttle.

Safety considerations

The drive from PUJ to the resort areas at night is straightforward. The main highway is well-maintained and reasonably lit in sections. There are no particular safety concerns on this route. The resort corridor is a heavily touristed area and transport drivers make this trip hundreds of times.

Inside the airport, the usual advice applies: do not follow unsolicited offers for rides. Use official taxis or your pre-booked transfer.

Pricing at night

Most transfer services do not charge extra for late-night arrivals, though some add a small surcharge of USD 5-10 for pickups between midnight and 6 AM. Taxi rates are fixed and do not change based on time of day.

Practical tips for late arrivals

Book your transfer in advance. This is not the time to improvise. Have your hotel address and booking confirmation accessible offline. The airport Wi-Fi works but is less reliable at night. If you are arriving at an all-inclusive resort, confirm with the hotel that late check-in is available — most resorts in the area have 24-hour reception, but it is worth verifying.

The roads are quiet, the ride is short, and you will be at your resort within half an hour of leaving the terminal. Late arrivals at Punta Cana are one of the smoother late-night airport experiences you can have.
