Taxi vs pre-booked transfer from Naples Airport

Last updated: April 2026

For central Naples, this is a straightforward comparison. For the Amalfi Coast and surrounding destinations, it is not really a comparison at all — the transfer wins by default.

Naples taxis

Naples has a predetermined fixed fare system from the airport, set by Naples City Council (Delibera G.C. n.258 of 27 June 2024, in force since 1 September 2024). Napoli Centrale, the Centro Direzionale and the ZTL historic centre are EUR 21.00; the port (Molo Beverello / Piazza Municipio) is EUR 24.00; Mergellina and Via Partenope are EUR 28.50. The fares are per vehicle and include the night, holiday, luggage and airport supplements — there is no separate night rate. Only motorway tolls and a EUR 5.00 minivan supplement can be added. Taxis are white and should display the official tariff card.

The system is good in principle but enforcement is inconsistent. Some drivers attempt to use the meter (which would produce a higher fare) or claim your destination falls under a dearer heading. Know your fare before you arrive, and ask for the tariffa predeterminata at the start of the ride — the rules require it to be requested then, and the driver cannot refuse. For Napoli Centrale and the immediate historic centre, EUR 21.00 is the fare, day or night.

The taxi rank is outside arrivals. The key warning: Naples Airport has a significant problem with unlicensed taxi touts who approach passengers inside the terminal. They are persistent and convincing. Decline all approaches. Use only white official taxis from the outdoor rank.

Pre-booked transfers to Naples

A sedan to central Naples is quoted per vehicle when you book. For a simple city centre trip it will generally sit above the EUR 21.00 predetermined taxi fare, but it delivers a driver waiting with your name in arrivals, a guaranteed vehicle, and no argument about tariffs. For travellers unfamiliar with Naples' taxi culture, the premium is worthwhile.

For the Amalfi Coast: transfers are essential

For Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, and the surrounding coast, the comparison changes entirely:

Taxis from Naples Airport to the Amalfi Coast: these runs are not unregulated — the council publishes predetermined fixed fares for them too, one way and per vehicle: Sorrento EUR 125.00, Positano EUR 145.00, Amalfi EUR 155.00, Ravello EUR 160.00, Pompei scavi EUR 70.00 (motorway tolls and the EUR 5.00 minivan supplement excluded). If a driver quotes you well above the published figure for one of these destinations, that is your cue to ask for the tariffa predeterminata.

Pre-booked transfers to the Amalfi Coast: quoted per vehicle when you book, with the price fixed in advance and a driver who knows the road. Compare the quote against the published taxi fare above — you now have a real number to judge it by, which is the whole point.

The Amalfi Coast roads (SS163) require an experienced driver. A pre-booked operator who specialises in these routes knows the timings, the passing spots on narrow sections, and your hotel's specific location.

When the taxi wins

For a solo traveller or couple heading to Zone 1 (Napoli Centrale, city centre) during the day: the EUR 16 fixed taxi is excellent value. Walk out, join the official rank, state the fixed rate.

When the transfer wins

Any Amalfi Coast destination: The pre-booked transfer is the right choice. It is cheaper than arranging a taxi at the airport for long distances, and far more reliable.

Families with children: No child seats in Italian taxis. Transfer with pre-arranged seats.

Night arrivals: Transfer price does not rise with night rates. EUR 30 transfer vs EUR 21 taxi — the difference is minimal and the transfer offers more certainty.

First-time visitors: Naples' taxi environment is among the more challenging in Italy. A pre-booked driver removes all friction.
