Marseille's airport taxis are often described as having fixed fares. They do not: they are metered on the prefectural tariff, and the airport publishes only an estimate. That uncertainty is exactly what a transfer removes — but a taxi still wins in plenty of situations.

The airport's own estimate is about 60 EUR by day and 70 EUR at night to reach Marseille or Aix, excluding extras such as baggage and tolls (Marseille Provence Airport, checked July 2026). Tariffs are revised periodically, so confirm with the driver before you set off.
So you do not know the exact total before getting in — ask the driver for an estimate to your address.

When a transfer makes more sense
Going outside Marseille: The airport only estimates fares to Marseille and Aix. If you're headed to Cassis, Arles, Avignon, or a Provence villa, there's no published figure at all — the meter decides, and you won't know the final cost. A transfer locks in the price.
Child seats: No Marseille taxi has a child seat. If you need one, a transfer is your only option.
Large groups: A minivan transfer for 6-8 people (€60-90) costs about the same as a metered taxi to the centre, with more space.
Language: Transfer companies usually offer English-speaking drivers. This matters less in Marseille than some people fear (most drivers know enough), but if communication is important to you, transfers are more reliable.
Late night after the last shuttle: If you arrive after midnight and the taxi rank is thin, a pre-booked transfer guarantees your ride.

What about the shuttle bus?
Before choosing between taxi and transfer, consider: the shuttle bus takes 25 minutes to Gare Saint-Charles for a fraction of any car fare. If you're going to the Vieux Port area, the shuttle plus a short walk saves you most of the cost of a taxi. The shuttle is the elephant in the room that makes both taxis and transfers feel expensive.
