Norman Manley Airport sits on the Palisadoes peninsula, about 20 km from New Kingston. The journey is short by distance but can be slow in traffic. Here is how the cost actually works.
Why there is no price list here
Jamaican airport taxis are not metered, and there is no published airport tariff. Authorized operators quote a fixed fare at their desk in the arrivals hall; a pre-booked transfer fixes the price at booking. Both give you a firm number before you get in the vehicle — which is the point. Figures published for this route vary widely across travel sites, and none of them is the price you will actually be quoted. So rather than invent one, here is what drives it and where the real number comes from.
Pre-booked transfer
Priced per vehicle for a standard sedan (1–3 passengers), fixed at booking. Minivans for larger groups cost more but are still per vehicle, not per head. No meter, no negotiation, and — importantly in Kingston — no exposure to traffic. Destinations within the city:
| Destination | Drive time |
|---|---|
| Downtown Kingston | 20–35 min |
| New Kingston (hotel/business district) | 25–40 min |
| Half Way Tree area | 30–45 min |
| Port Royal | Short hop, same peninsula |

Authorized airport taxi (JUTA)
JUTA and other authorized operators quote fixed fares at their desks in the arrivals hall. You state your destination, they quote, you decide. You are not negotiating with individual drivers and the fare is settled before you get in the vehicle. If a quote does not suit you, you can ask another authorized desk.
Long-distance transfers
Beyond Kingston, the price scales with drive time rather than anything you can look up:
| Destination | Drive time |
|---|---|
| Blue Mountains (Irish Town/Strawberry Hill) | 1–1.5 hours |
| Blue Mountains (higher elevations) | 1.5–2 hours |
| Mandeville | ~2 hours |
| Port Antonio | 2–3 hours |
| Ocho Rios | 2–3 hours |
| Montego Bay | 3–4 hours |
For north coast destinations, seriously consider whether Norman Manley is the right airport at all. Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay is much closer to Ocho Rios, Negril, and the north coast resorts, and the flight often costs less than the road transfer.
Rental car costs
Daily rates move with season and vehicle class, so compare at the time you book. Budget separately for insurance (strongly recommended — Jamaican roads are unpredictable), fuel, and parking. Driving is on the left. Kingston traffic is intense.
What about route taxis?
Route taxis — shared cars running fixed routes — are the cheapest transport in Jamaica by a wide margin. But they do not serve the airport, and you would need paid transport to reach Harbour View to pick one up, which defeats the purpose. These are for Kingston residents, not arriving travelers with luggage.
The value calculation
For a solo traveler with no booking, the authorized taxi desk is the straightforward choice — a fixed quote, an assigned car, no advance planning. For two or more passengers, a pre-booked transfer starts to look better, because the price is per vehicle rather than per person and you skip the desk entirely.
The part worth internalising: because both options are fixed-price, Kingston's notorious rush-hour traffic costs you time but not money. A meter would punish you for both. Whichever you choose, get the number before you get in the car — and never take an unlicensed ride to save a few dollars.
