Norman Manley Airport Transfers with Family and Kids

Jamaica is a popular family destination, though most families head to the north coast resorts via Montego Bay. If you are flying into Kingston — for the Blue Mountains, Port Antonio, or Kingston itself — here is what families need to know about the airport transfer.

The airport with children

Norman Manley Airport is manageable in size. The walk from the plane to immigration is not long, but queues at passport control can be slow during peak times. With restless children, this is the hardest part. Have snacks and distractions ready.

Baggage claim can be slow. The terminal has restrooms and a few basic food options. Once through customs, the exit to the pick-up area is quick.

Car seats — the essential detail

Jamaican law requires child restraints, but enforcement is inconsistent and availability is poor. Airport taxis and JUTA vehicles do not carry child seats. This leaves you with two options:

1. Bring your own travel car seat. This is the reliable choice. A portable, FAA-approved seat works on the plane and in the car. 2. Request one from your transfer provider. When booking a private transfer, specify the child's age and weight and request a car seat. Confirm availability in writing. Not all providers can guarantee this.

Do not assume any vehicle in Jamaica will have a child seat. Plan for this before you travel.

The Palisadoes road

The airport sits on a narrow peninsula connected to the mainland by the Palisadoes road. This road runs along the harbor with water on both sides. It is a single road — there is no alternative route. In normal conditions, the 20 km drive to New Kingston takes 25–40 minutes.

During rush hour, especially the afternoon commute (4–7 PM), this road can crawl. With children in the car, a 60+ minute drive in stop-and-go traffic is tiring for everyone. If possible, time your arrival to avoid peak hours.

Luggage and vehicle size

Families heading to beach resorts or the Blue Mountains tend to pack heavily. A standard sedan taxi may not comfortably fit two adults, two children, a stroller, and multiple suitcases. When booking a transfer, be specific about:

  • Number of passengers (including children)
  • Number and size of suitcases
  • Strollers, car seats, or other bulky items
Request a minivan or SUV if your luggage exceeds what a sedan can handle. The cost difference is usually USD 10–20 — worth it for comfort.

Destinations beyond Kingston

Many families arriving at Norman Manley are heading to:

  • Blue Mountains: 1–2 hours, winding mountain roads. Children prone to car sickness should take precautions. Beautiful scenery keeps older kids engaged.
  • Port Antonio: 2–3 hours along the coast. A longer drive but scenic.
  • Ocho Rios/north coast: 2–3 hours. Consider whether Montego Bay airport (MBJ) would have been closer.
For any destination over an hour away, a comfortable vehicle with space for the family makes a real difference.

The recommendation

For families, a pre-booked transfer is the clear choice. You control the vehicle size, arrange car seats in advance, skip the taxi desk queue, and go directly to your accommodation. At USD 25–40 to New Kingston, it is not an extravagance. It is how you start a family holiday without unnecessary stress.
