The child seat situation

This is the most important thing to plan ahead. Taxis at GCM do not carry child seats. Cayman Islands law does not strictly mandate car seats in taxis, but most parents will want one for young children.

Getting through the airport with kids

GCM is a single-terminal airport with a straightforward layout. After immigration and customs, you walk directly into the arrivals area — no long corridors, no inter-terminal trains. The walk from the plane to the exit is under 5 minutes once you clear the queues.

Restrooms are in the arrivals hall. The terminal is air-conditioned. Outside, the taxi rank and pickup area are immediately in front of you — no shuttle bus needed.

Luggage, and how the fare counts your family

A standard taxi sedan fits 2-3 large suitcases. If you are carrying a stroller, a car seat and multiple bags, request a van taxi at the rank or book a minivan transfer.

Two things about the official fare schedule are worth knowing before you do the sums. The fare covers up to 4 passengers as one price, and then steps up for each additional passenger — so a family of six is not charged the same as a family of four. And your first two bags are free, with each extra piece adding CI$1.00 / US$1.25. Pre-booked transfers include all luggage in the quoted price, which removes the mental arithmetic when you are also managing children.

Best option for families

A pre-booked minivan transfer with child seats is the least stressful choice. The driver is waiting when you exit, the vehicle has room for all your gear, and the price is settled before you arrive.
