Owen Roberts International Airport sits roughly 3 km from central George Town and about 8 km from Seven Mile Beach. A taxi to George Town costs KYD 10-15 / USD 12-18 (~EUR 11-17), while Seven Mile Beach runs KYD 20-30 / USD 25-37 (~EUR 23-34). There is no public bus from the terminal. A pre-booked private transfer costs USD 25-55 (~EUR 23-50) with meet-and-greet. Both USD and KYD are accepted everywhere at a fixed rate of KYD 1 = USD 1.22.

GCM is a small, single-terminal airport. After clearing immigration and customs — which can take 20-45 minutes depending on how many flights land at once — you exit into a compact arrivals hall. Once outside, a short covered walkway leads to the taxi and pickup area.

The airport has no train, no monorail, no shuttle bus loop. Your options are a taxi from the rank or a vehicle waiting for you. Rental car desks are inside the terminal if you prefer to drive, but keep in mind that driving is on the left side of the road in the Cayman Islands.

Taxis are not metered. Fares are government-regulated and posted at the airport. They are per taxi, not per person — up to 3-4 passengers share the same fare. There is a KYD 2 / USD 2.50 surcharge per piece of luggage beyond two bags.

The Cayman Islands are expensive by Caribbean standards. A short taxi ride that would cost USD 8 elsewhere costs USD 15 here. But distances are small — Grand Cayman is only 35 km long — so even the priciest ride to East End tops out around USD 100 (~EUR 92).

A 25% surcharge applies to taxis between 23:00 and 06:00. Pre-booked transfers usually have no night surcharge.

GCM receives flights until around 22:00-22:30 on busy days. The airport is quiet by 23:00. Taxis are available for late arrivals, but the rank thins out quickly after the last scheduled flight.

The 25% night surcharge on taxis after 23:00 pushes a Seven Mile Beach ride to roughly USD 31-46 (~EUR 28-42). Pre-booked transfers typically have no night surcharge, making them effectively cheaper after hours. Roads are empty at night and the drive is fast, but street lighting outside George Town is limited.

GCM is small enough that you will not get lost, and the walk from arrivals to taxis is short and flat. However, taxis do not carry child seats. If you need a car seat or booster, bring your own or book a transfer that provides one.

Standard taxi sedans fit 2-3 large suitcases. Families with strollers, car seats, and multiple bags should request a van taxi or book a minivan transfer (USD 45-75 / ~EUR 41-69) to avoid the awkward luggage negotiation.

Pre-booked transfer: Driver waits in the arrivals hall past customs, holding a name board. Some services wait in the parking lot directly in front of the terminal — you will receive instructions when you book. This is not a sprawling mega-airport, so finding your driver is straightforward.
