Owen Roberts Airport (GCM) to George Town and Seven Mile Beach — Transfer Guide

Owen Roberts International Airport sits roughly 3 km from central George Town and about 8 km from Seven Mile Beach. Cayman taxis are not metered. Fares come from the National Taxi Fare Schedule, a government tariff set by road distance and passenger count (SL 29 of 2019, in force since 2 August 2019). For 1-4 passengers it starts at CI$9.60 (US$12.00) for the first mile and adds CI$0.80 (US$1.00) for every further 0.2 mile. On the Public Transport Unit's own published examples, that puts the airport at US$20 to Margaritaville Beach Resort, US$27 to the Ritz-Carlton and US$34 to the Kimpton Seafire on Seven Mile Beach. There is no public bus from the terminal. The schedule is revised from time to time — check the government's free CI:GO fare app or the chart posted at the rank before you travel.

GCM is a small, single-terminal airport. After clearing immigration and customs — which can take 20-45 minutes depending on how many flights land at once — you exit into a compact arrivals hall. Once outside, a short covered walkway leads to the taxi and pickup area.

The airport has no train, no monorail, no shuttle bus loop. Your options are a taxi from the rank or a vehicle waiting for you. Rental car desks are inside the terminal if you prefer to drive, but keep in mind that driving is on the left side of the road in the Cayman Islands.

Taxis are not metered. The fare is per vehicle for up to 4 passengers — above four, the schedule steps the fare up for each additional passenger, up to a maximum of 15.

The first two pieces of luggage are free; each additional piece may add CI$1.00 / US$1.25. If the driver waits for you part-way through a journey, the first two minutes are free and then CI$0.80 / US$1.00 per minute may be added.

There is no night surcharge. The 25% after-hours surcharge that used to apply was removed when the current schedule came in — fares are the same around the clock.

Uber and Lyft do not operate in the Cayman Islands.

The Cayman Islands are expensive by Caribbean standards, but Grand Cayman is only about 35 km long, and the fare schedule stops at 36 miles — so distance caps what any ride can cost.

The pattern worth taking from this: George Town and Seven Mile Beach are cheap because they are close. East End is not. At around US$127-129 it is one of the priciest airport runs in the Caribbean, purely because it is a 24-mile drive on a distance-based tariff. Budget for it rather than being surprised at the rank.

Fares are revised from time to time. Check the CI:GO app or the posted chart for the figure that applies on the day you travel.

GCM receives flights until around 22:00-22:30 on busy days. The airport is quiet by 23:00. Taxis are available for late arrivals, but the rank thins out quickly once the last scheduled passengers are away.

Taxi fares do not change at night. The current national schedule removed the old 25% after-hours surcharge, so the fare posted for your destination is the same at 02:00 as at 14:00.

The real late-night risk at GCM is availability, not price. If your flight is delayed past the last scheduled arrival, there may simply be no taxi waiting — which is the case for pre-booking. Roads are empty at night and the drive is fast, but street lighting outside George Town is limited.

GCM is small enough that you will not get lost, and the walk from arrivals to taxis is short and flat. However, taxis do not carry child seats. If you need a car seat or booster, bring your own or book a transfer that provides one.

Standard taxi sedans fit 2-3 large suitcases. Families with strollers, car seats and multiple bags should request a van taxi or book a minivan transfer to avoid the awkward luggage negotiation. Worth knowing before you do the sums: the fare schedule charges for each passenger above four, so a van for six is not priced the same as a sedan for four. Your first two bags are free either way.

Taxi: Walk outside arrivals and the taxi rank is to your right. A dispatcher assigns you a vehicle during busy periods.

Pre-booked transfer: Driver waits in the arrivals hall past customs, holding a name board. Some services wait in the parking lot directly in front of the terminal — you will receive instructions when you book. This is not a sprawling mega-airport, so finding your driver is straightforward.

Choose a taxi if: You are travelling light, heading to George Town or nearby Seven Mile Beach, and comfortable with the posted fare system. Quick and easy for 1-3 people.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: You want a fixed price confirmed before landing, you are arriving late at night, you need a child seat, or you are heading to East End or a specific resort.

Choose a rental car if: You plan to explore the island during your stay. Grand Cayman is easy to drive but remember the left-hand traffic.
