Fortaleza Airport to the City – What You Actually Need to Know

Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR) is located about 10 km south of the main beach area (Praia de Iracema, Meireles, Beira Mar). The ride takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic.

Your options: a pre-booked private transfer (from BRL 100–180), a taxi (metered on the city tariff — roughly BRL 47–65 for the run to the beach), app-based rides like Uber and 99 (usually the cheapest; the app quotes you before you confirm), or a city bus (a flat single fare, cheapest of all). Fortaleza is one of the cheaper Brazilian cities for airport transport.

Fortaleza Airport is a modern terminal that handles both domestic and international flights. After landing, baggage claim is on the ground floor. Immigration for international arrivals is generally efficient — 15–30 minutes in most cases.

The arrivals hall has ATMs, currency exchange (rates are poor — change only what you need), SIM card vendors, and a tourist information desk. Free Wi-Fi is available but can be slow during peak hours.

The exit leads to the ground transportation area where you will find the taxi stand, a waiting area for pre-booked transfers, and the rideshare pickup zone.

Destination matters. Fortaleza's beach neighborhoods stretch along the coast. The figures below are pre-booked transfer prices, which are fixed when you book:

For a taxi on any of these, apply the municipal meter tariff below to the distance. For Uber or 99, the app quotes you before you confirm — that is the only number worth trusting, since it moves with demand.

Fortaleza is affordable by international standards. Taxis are metered on a municipal tariff, not sold at a fixed cooperative rate. Decreto nº 16.574, signed on 8 January 2026 and in force since 19 January 2026, sets it:

Bandeira 2 applies at night (20:00–06:00 on weekdays), from 13:00 on Saturdays, and all day on Sundays and public holidays. Applying the tariff to the roughly 10 km from the airport to Praia de Iracema or Meireles gives about BRL 47 on Bandeira 1 and about BRL 60 on Bandeira 2, before waiting time. Tariffs are revised periodically — this one rose 18.7% in January 2026 — so check the current table, which must be displayed inside the cab.

Uber and 99 (Brazil's popular ride app) are usually the cheapest option. The app shows the price before you confirm, which is the only figure worth relying on: ride-hailing prices move with demand and we will not print an estimate that surge pricing makes wrong. Other things to know:

• Pickup is outside the terminal (follow signs to the designated area)
• Surge pricing during peak hours or holidays can push prices well up
• Some drivers may cancel if they see the pickup is at the airport

Pre-booked transfers cost more at BRL 100–180 but include a driver with a name sign, air-conditioned vehicle, and guaranteed service.

Fortaleza receives international flights from Lisbon, Miami, and other hubs that can arrive late in the evening. Domestic flights run until around midnight.

Taxis are available 24/7 at the airport stand, though after 20:00 the meter switches to Bandeira 2 (BRL 5.28 per km instead of BRL 4.06). Uber and 99 have reasonable late-night coverage in Fortaleza, though wait times may be longer after midnight.

The city bus does not run late at night. For arrivals after 22:00, stick to taxi, rideshare, or a pre-booked transfer.

Late-night traffic is minimal, cutting the drive to the beach area to a smooth 15–25 minutes. A pre-booked transfer is recommended for late arrivals — your driver will be waiting regardless of delays.

Brazilian law requires children under 7.5 years old to use an appropriate child seat, and children under 10 must ride in the back seat. Standard taxis and rideshare vehicles do not carry child seats.

A pre-booked transfer is the reliable way to get child seats in Fortaleza. Specify your children's ages and weights when booking.

For families heading to beach resorts like Beach Park or Cumbuco, the longer drive makes a pre-booked transfer especially worthwhile — fixed price, comfortable vehicle, and car seats included.

Luggage space in standard taxis is adequate for 2–3 bags. Families with more luggage should request a minivan or larger vehicle.

Pre-booked transfers: Drivers wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign. The terminal is modern and well-organized — finding your driver is easy.

Taxis: The taxi stand is outside the arrivals exit, clearly marked. Fares run on the municipal meter tariff, and the rate table must be displayed inside the cab — check it against the meter at the end of the trip.

Uber / 99: Follow signs to the designated rideshare pickup area, which is a short walk from the terminal. Request your ride from the app once you reach the pickup zone.

Bus: The bus stop is a few minutes' walk from the terminal. Buses accept the Bilhete Unico card — you cannot pay with large bills.

Choose Uber/99 if: you are comfortable with ride apps, heading to the beach area during normal hours, and want the cheapest ride. Check the estimate in the app before you confirm.

Choose a taxi if: you prefer not to use apps, want a straightforward experience at the stand, and do not mind paying a bit more for convenience. The meter is regulated, so there is nothing to negotiate.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: you are arriving late, traveling with family and need car seats, heading to a distant beach resort, or this is your first time in Brazil and you want everything handled.

Skip the bus unless: you are a solo backpacker with one bag and plenty of time.
