Cairns Airport to the City — Everything You Actually Need to Know

Cairns Airport (CNS) is just 7 km from the city center — one of the shortest airport-to-city distances in Australia, and the drive takes 10–15 minutes. Taxis are metered on maximum fares set by the Queensland Government: for regional Queensland, which covers Cairns, that is AUD 2.88 per kilometre plus a flagfall and AUD 1.04 per minute whenever the taxi is not moving (rates effective 1 July 2026). Over 7 km the distance alone puts about AUD 20 on the meter before the flagfall, waiting time and the airport rank levy. The Sun Palm airport shuttle and pre-booked private transfers price their own services — get the figure from them when you book. Maximum fares are revised each 1 July, so check the current ones before you travel.

CNS has two terminals: the Domestic Terminal (T1) and the International Terminal (T2), separated by a short covered walkway. Most visitors arriving from overseas clear immigration at T2, which is small, modern, and efficient.

After baggage claim, you pass through biosecurity — Australia takes this seriously. Declare any food, plant material, or wooden items. Fines for undeclared items are steep.

The arrivals hall has ATMs from Westpac and Commonwealth Bank, a currency exchange counter, and free Wi-Fi. SIM cards from Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are available at small kiosks or the nearby convenience store; prepaid plans change often, so compare what each is offering on the day. Telstra has the best coverage in regional North Queensland.

The terminal exits directly to the taxi rank and shuttle pickup area. The heat and humidity hit you immediately — Cairns is tropical, warm and sticky year-round.

The distance is so short that the differences between options are modest in absolute terms.

Taxis are the most straightforward option, and the only one running on a regulated tariff. The rank is at the front of each terminal and Cairns Taxis is the regulated operator for the region. The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads sets maximum fares and revises them each 1 July: for regional Queensland the distance rate is AUD 2.88 per kilometre, waiting time is AUD 1.04 per minute, and the booking fee is AUD 1.90. There are two flagfall tariffs — a lower one from 7am to 7pm on weekdays, and AUD 6.20 at all other times, including public holidays. An airport levy is added when the meter starts at the rank; check the amount posted at the rank, as the figures published by the airport and by the taxi operator do not currently agree.

The Sun Palm shuttle is the budget option — it picks up from both terminals and drops at major hotels and the CBD. It is a shared service, so the route may include several stops. Sun Palm sets its own fare; take it from them rather than from a figure printed here.

Uber and DiDi both operate in Cairns. Neither publishes a tariff — the app prices each ride when you book it. The pickup zone is near the taxi rank; follow signs for rideshare.

A rental car makes sense if you plan to explore the region — the Atherton Tablelands, Daintree, Port Douglas, and Mission Beach are all road trips from Cairns.

The taxi is metered, so its fare is not a fixed number per destination — it is arithmetic you can do yourself from the Queensland Government's maximum fares (regional Queensland, effective 1 July 2026):

• AUD 2.88 per kilometre
• AUD 1.04 per minute whenever the taxi is stopped or crawling
• A flagfall that depends on the time: AUD 6.20 outside 7am–7pm on weekdays, and a lower rate during those weekday hours
• AUD 1.90 booking fee if you phone or app-book rather than take the rank
• Plus the airport rank levy, added when the meter starts

On that basis the 7 km to the CBD puts roughly AUD 20 on the meter in distance alone. The Northern Beaches, Palm Cove, Kuranda, Port Douglas, Mission Beach and Cape Tribulation are all substantially further, and the fare scales with the distance and the traffic rather than sitting at a fixed price — which is why we no longer print a per-destination table here. For the long runs to Port Douglas or the Daintree, a quoted fixed-price transfer or the Sun Palm coach is usually the sensible comparison; ask them for the figure.

Maximum fares are reviewed and re-gazetted every 1 July, so treat the Queensland Government's fares page as the live version rather than any number on a travel site.

Cairns CBD is compact. Most hotels, the Esplanade, and the Reef Fleet Terminal (for Great Barrier Reef trips) are within the same zone. If your hotel is in the CBD, the fare from the airport is among the cheapest of any Australian airport, simply because it is only 7 km.

Cairns Airport has a curfew — no flights between 11 PM and 6 AM. This means true late-night arrivals are rare. The latest flights typically land around 10–10:30 PM.

At that hour, taxis are still available at the rank. Uber and DiDi have reduced availability but generally work. The Sun Palm shuttle runs services aligned with flight arrivals, including evening ones — check their schedule for your specific flight.

If your flight is significantly delayed and lands close to curfew, taxis will still be waiting. The short 7 km distance means even a limited transport situation resolves quickly.

Cairns Airport is small and easy to navigate with children. The walk from arrivals to the taxi rank is under 2 minutes. Luggage trolleys are available at baggage claim.

For families, the main consideration is vehicle size. A standard taxi sedan fits 4 passengers and 2 large suitcases. If you travel as a family of 4–5 with holiday luggage, diving gear, or strollers, request a van or book a larger transfer vehicle.

Child seats are required by Australian law for children under 7. Taxis are legally exempt from child seat requirements in Queensland, but if you prefer a child seat, book a transfer and request one in advance. Some families bring their own portable booster seat.

Taxi: Walk straight out of arrivals, the taxi rank is immediately ahead. A marshal manages the queue during busy periods.

Sun Palm shuttle: The pickup point is outside arrivals, clearly signed. You can pre-book or buy a ticket at the counter inside the terminal.

Pre-booked transfer: Your driver typically waits in the arrivals hall with a name board. For domestic arrivals (T1), the driver may wait outside near the pickup zone.

Uber / DiDi: Follow rideshare signs to the designated pickup area near the taxi rank.

The airport is small. You cannot get lost. Everything is within a 2-minute walk from the terminal exit.

Choose a taxi if: you want the simplest, no-planning-required option. Walk out, get in, arrive in 10 minutes.

Choose the Sun Palm shuttle if: you are on a budget and heading to a major hotel in the CBD or Northern Beaches.

Choose Uber/DiDi if: you have a working phone with data and want to save a few dollars over a taxi.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: you are heading to Port Douglas, Palm Cove, or beyond, travel with family, or want a specific vehicle type.

Choose a rental car if: you plan to explore the region — Daintree, Atherton Tablelands, and Mission Beach all require a car.

Cairns Airport is one of the easiest in Australia. The city is close, the options are clear, and the prices are reasonable. Do not overthink this one.
