Taxi vs Private Transfer from Cairns Airport — Which One?

Last updated: March 2026

Cairns Airport is only 7 km from the CBD, which means the taxi-versus-transfer decision is different here than at airports with longer journeys. The short distance keeps costs low for all options.

Side-by-side comparison

| Factor | Taxi | Private Transfer | |--------|------|------------------| | Price to CBD | AUD 25–35 / EUR 15–21 | AUD 50–80 / EUR 30–48 | | Booking | Walk-up at rank | Pre-booked online | | Price certainty | Metered (predictable for 7 km) | Fixed at booking | | Vehicle quality | Standard sedans, well-maintained | Newer vehicles, choice of size | | Driver meets you | You walk to the rank (2 min) | Driver meets you inside | | Wait time | Minimal — rank usually has cars | None — driver is waiting | | Child seats | Not required in QLD taxis | Available on request | | Payment | Cash or card | Card or cash |

For the CBD: taxi wins on value

For a straight run to the Cairns CBD, Esplanade, or Reef Fleet Terminal, the taxi is the practical choice. The rank is steps from the terminal exit, vehicles are always available, and the metered fare is predictable at this short distance. You save AUD 20–45 over a private transfer.

Uber and DiDi are even cheaper at AUD 20–30, making them the best-value option if you have a phone with data.

For Northern Beaches: either works

Tripping to Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, or Palm Cove adds distance and cost. A taxi to Palm Cove runs AUD 55–75, and a transfer costs about the same. At this distance, the price gap narrows and the transfer's fixed pricing becomes more attractive.

The Sun Palm shuttle also serves the Northern Beaches for AUD 25–35 per adult — worth considering if you travel light.

For Port Douglas: transfer recommended

Port Douglas is 67 km north of Cairns Airport, a 60–70 minute drive along the scenic Captain Cook Highway. A taxi costs AUD 180–240 on the meter. A pre-booked transfer costs about the same but with a fixed price agreed in advance.

For Port Douglas, the transfer wins. You know the exact cost, the driver monitors your flight, and you get a comfortable vehicle for a meaningful journey. The Sun Palm shuttle to Port Douglas (AUD 50–60) is the budget alternative.

What about the shuttle?

The Sun Palm shuttle deserves consideration for budget travelers. At AUD 18 to the CBD and AUD 50–60 to Port Douglas, it is significantly cheaper than both taxis and transfers. The trade-off is time — the shared service makes multiple hotel stops.

The bottom line

For the CBD, take a taxi or use Uber. The 7 km trip does not justify the premium of a private transfer. For Port Douglas or if you travel with family and need a specific vehicle, book a transfer. For everything in between, the shuttle offers the best value if you are not in a rush.
