Getting from Cairns Airport to the City with Kids and Family

Last updated: March 2026

Cairns Airport is small, modern, and easy to navigate with children. The 7 km trip to the CBD is short enough that even restless kids will not have time to cause problems.

Inside the terminal

CNS is compact. After baggage claim and biosecurity (remind kids not to bring fruit or snacks from the plane — Australian biosecurity is strict), you enter the arrivals hall. Restrooms with baby-changing facilities are available. The walk to the taxi rank is under 2 minutes, all on one level.

There is a small convenience store in the terminal if you need water, snacks, or sunscreen. Cairns is tropical — sun protection matters from the moment you step outside.

Child seats in Queensland

Australian law requires children under 7 to use appropriate child restraints in private vehicles. However, Queensland exempts taxis and rideshare vehicles from this requirement. This means:

  • You can legally take a taxi or Uber with children and no child seat
  • If you prefer a child seat for safety, book a private transfer and request one at least 24 hours ahead
  • Some families bring a portable booster seat in their luggage
For the 7 km CBD trip, most families are comfortable without a dedicated seat. For longer journeys to Port Douglas (67 km) or Mission Beach, a child seat is a sensible precaution.

Vehicle options for families

| Family Size | Vehicle | Price to CBD (AUD) | Price (EUR) | |-------------|---------|-------------------|-------------| | 2 adults + 1–2 kids | Standard taxi | 25–35 | 15–21 | | 2 adults + 2–3 kids + luggage | Larger taxi / transfer sedan | 30–45 | 18–27 | | Large family + heavy luggage | Transfer van / people mover | 70–100 | 42–61 |

Cairns taxis include a mix of sedans and larger vehicles. If you need a specific size, a pre-booked transfer guarantees the right vehicle.

The Sun Palm shuttle with kids

The Sun Palm shuttle is family-friendly. Children under 4 ride free, and ages 4–14 receive discounted fares. The bus accommodates strollers in the luggage compartment. For a family of 4, the shuttle to the CBD costs around AUD 45–55 total — less than a single taxi fare.

The downside is time. The shared service stops at multiple hotels, so a 10-minute taxi ride becomes 15–25 minutes. With tired children, this matters.

Heading to Port Douglas with kids

Many families fly into Cairns and head straight to Port Douglas. The 60–70 minute drive along the coast is scenic but long for small children. Options:

  • Private transfer: AUD 180–240 (EUR 109–145), direct, child seat available
  • Sun Palm shuttle: AUD 50–60 per adult (EUR 30–36), multiple stops, 90 minutes
For families with young children, the private transfer is worth the premium. A direct drive in a comfortable vehicle with a child seat beats 90 minutes on a shared bus.

Practical tips

Apply sunscreen before leaving the terminal. Cairns UV levels are extreme, even on cloudy days. The walk to your vehicle is short but the sun is intense.

Bring swimwear in your carry-on. If your accommodation has a pool, the kids will want it immediately. Checked bags can wait.

Stay hydrated. Buy water at the terminal. Cairns humidity is high, and the transition from air-conditioned planes to tropical air hits hard.
