Cairns Airport has something most airports do not: a curfew from 11 PM to 6 AM. No commercial flights operate during these hours. This means truly late-night arrivals — 1 AM, 3 AM landings — do not happen at CNS. The latest flights typically touch down around 10–10:30 PM.
What is available for late evening arrivals
| Option | Available at 10 PM? | Notes | |--------|---------------------|-------| | Taxi | Yes | Rank is staffed for last arrivals | | Uber / DiDi | Yes | Reduced availability but functional | | Sun Palm shuttle | Usually yes | Runs services aligned with evening flights | | Pre-booked transfer | Yes | Driver waits for your flight | | Rental car | Depends | Some counters close by 10 PM |
The practical picture
Because of the curfew, Cairns does not have the problem that many tropical airports face — a wave of flights at 2 AM with no transport. The latest arrivals are between 9–10:30 PM, and the transport infrastructure handles this well.
Taxis queue at the rank for the last flights of the day. The short 7 km drive to the CBD means even a small number of taxis can clear the arrivals efficiently. You are unlikely to wait more than 5–10 minutes.
Uber and DiDi have reduced driver numbers in the evening but are generally functional in Cairns at this hour. The fare to the CBD remains AUD 20–30 (EUR 12–18).
The Sun Palm shuttle coordinates with evening flight arrivals. Check their schedule when you book — if your flight is covered, the AUD 18 (EUR 11) fare applies as normal.
If your flight is delayed
Flight delays can push arrivals close to the 11 PM curfew. If this happens, the airport still processes you normally. Taxis and transfers will still be available — drivers monitor flight statuses.
If a delay is severe enough that the flight is rescheduled to the next morning, the airline handles rebooking and accommodation. This is rare but the curfew makes it a possibility during weather events (cyclone season runs November through April).
Rental car counters
If you planned to pick up a rental car, check the counter hours. Some close at 9 or 10 PM. Avis, Hertz, Budget, and Europcar are all at the terminal, but evening hours vary. If your flight lands after 9 PM, confirm with the rental company that the counter will be open.
Heading to Port Douglas at night
The Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas is scenic but unlit in sections and passes through areas with wildlife on the road (kangaroos, cassowaries). If you arrive late and are heading to Port Douglas, a pre-booked transfer with an experienced local driver is the safest choice. The drive takes about 60–70 minutes and costs AUD 180–240 (EUR 109–145).
Do not attempt this drive yourself in a rental car at night if you are unfamiliar with the road. Wildlife collisions are a real risk on North Queensland roads after dark.
