Gold Coast Airport Transfers: What You Actually Need to Know

Gold Coast Airport (OOL) sits at Coolangatta, right on the Queensland-New South Wales border. Surfers Paradise is about 25 km north and takes 25-35 minutes by road. The cheapest option is the 777 bus, which connects the airport to the G:link tram at Broadbeach South: every Translink bus and tram journey in South East Queensland is currently a flat 50 cents, however far you travel and however you pay. A taxi is metered on Queensland's maximum tariff and comes to roughly $75-90 AUD to Surfers Paradise. The airport is compact and easy to navigate, so you will be outside and making transport decisions within minutes of collecting your bags.

OOL is a small, single-terminal airport. Domestic arrivals walk straight out to the ground transport area. International arrivals clear customs and immigration first, which can take 20-45 minutes depending on the flight. The terminal is modern but modest. There is a small food court, ATMs, currency exchange, and free Wi-Fi. The bus stop, taxi rank, and rideshare pickup zone are all within a short walk of the terminal exit. Rental car counters are in the arrivals hall.

Bus (Route 777) runs from the airport to the G:link tram at Broadbeach South, from where the tram carries on up the coast through Broadbeach to Surfers Paradise and Southport. The bus takes about 45-60 minutes and runs roughly every 15 minutes during the day. The fare is a flat 50 cents: Translink charges 50 cents for every bus, tram and train journey in South East Queensland regardless of distance, and it is the same 50 cents on a go card, a contactless bank card or a paper ticket. Tap on and off properly and the bus-plus-tram trip still counts as one 50-cent journey. The network is cashless, so you cannot pay the driver. It is by far the cheapest option but not ideal with heavy luggage.

Taxi ranks are directly outside arrivals. Fares are metered on the maximum tariff set by the Queensland Government — $3.80 flagfall between 7am and 7pm on weekdays, $6.20 at all other times, plus $2.77 per kilometre in South East Queensland and $1.04 per minute whenever the taxi is stopped (Queensland Government maximum fares, effective 1 July 2026). Over the 25 km to Surfers Paradise that puts the meter at roughly $75-90 AUD once traffic and lights are counted. The maximum fares are reviewed annually, so check the current rate before you travel. Taxis accommodate up to four passengers.

Rideshare (Uber, DiDi, Ola) operates at OOL with a designated pickup zone. Fares are set by the apps rather than regulated, move with demand and are not published in advance, so check the quote in the app before you request a car.

Private transfers are booked in advance. A driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. Prices are fixed at booking. Vehicles range from sedans to minibuses for larger groups.

Rental cars are available from counters in the terminal. This makes sense if you plan to explore the region, but for just the airport-to-hotel trip, it is usually overkill.

Bus and tram anywhere on the Translink network: a flat 50 cents per journey. Taxis run on the Queensland maximum tariff (flagfall $3.80 from 7am to 7pm on weekdays and $6.20 at all other times, plus $2.77 per kilometre in South East Queensland and $1.04 a minute while stopped, effective 1 July 2026), which works out at roughly $75-90 AUD over the 25 km to Surfers Paradise and roughly $60-75 AUD over the 20 km to Broadbeach. Byron Bay is a different proposition: at about 95 km the meter alone would pass $250, so drivers normally quote a fixed price for the cross-border run — agree it before you get in. Private transfer to Surfers Paradise: $70-110 AUD for the vehicle; to Byron Bay $100-160 AUD. Rideshare fares are set by the apps and are not published in advance. Tolls are generally not an issue on Gold Coast routes.

The 777 bus runs until approximately 23:00 on most nights, with reduced frequency after 20:00 and no service in the very early morning hours. Taxis are available around the clock at the airport rank. Rideshare availability drops after midnight and surge pricing may apply. If your flight lands after 22:00, having a transfer booked in advance avoids the uncertainty of waiting for a taxi or finding a rideshare driver.

The 777 bus has limited luggage space and no child seat options, making it impractical for families with car seats and multiple bags. Taxis can fit one pram in the boot alongside two suitcases at most. Australian law requires approved child restraints for children up to 7 years old. Taxis are exempt, but if you want your child in a proper seat, book a private transfer and request it when booking. Larger families or groups should consider a minivan transfer.

Pre-booked transfer drivers wait in the arrivals hall or just outside the exit with a name board. The taxi rank is immediately outside the terminal doors to the right. The rideshare pickup zone is a short walk from the terminal, clearly signed. Bus stops are located at the front of the terminal. OOL is small enough that you will not get lost finding any of these.

Take the bus if you are traveling light, not in a hurry, and comfortable with public transport.

Take a rideshare if you want door-to-door service at a reasonable price and are comfortable with variable pricing.

Take a taxi if you prefer a guaranteed vehicle right outside the door with no app needed.

Book a private transfer if you are traveling with family, have a lot of luggage, need a child seat, or want the certainty of someone waiting for you regardless of when you land.
