How much it costs to get from Queenstown Airport to your destination

Last updated: April 2026

Queenstown Airport is 8 km from the town center. Prices increase for destinations further out and for ski areas and Wanaka.

Prices to Queenstown town center

Public bus (Orbus): $2.50 with a Bee Card, $10 cash (adult fare from the airport), per the Otago Regional Council/Queenstown Airport. The cheapest option, running roughly every 15-30 minutes.

Shared shuttle (Super Shuttle): No fixed rate published — it's a shared door-to-door service and advertises pricing 'about half of a taxi'; get a quote when you book.

Taxi (metered): $50-85 NZD (about $29-50 USD), per Queenstown Airport's own published fare estimate, which includes a $9.10 airport pickup fee. Direct to your accommodation.

Uber: Available per Queenstown Airport (the only app-based option currently listed), but with limited driver availability and no published fare — check the app for a live quote.

Pre-booked transfer (sedan): Fixed price, driver waiting, agreed when you book — no fixed published rate; get a quote from the transfer provider.

Prices to other destinations

  • Remarkables Park/Frankton (near airport): $25-40 NZD by taxi, per Queenstown Airport
  • Arrowtown (20 km): $85-115 NZD by taxi, per Queenstown Airport

For Jack's Point, the ski areas (Coronet Peak, Remarkables), Wanaka, and Glenorchy, taxi and transfer fares were not published by the airport and increase with distance and winter driving conditions — get a fixed quote from a pre-booked transfer service, or ask the taxi company for an estimate, before you travel.

Why ski area transfers cost more

Ski areas are accessed via mountain roads that add distance, time, and complexity (especially in winter). The roads to Remarkables and Coronet Peak involve altitude gain and potentially icy conditions. Drivers need appropriate vehicles and equipment. This justifies the higher pricing compared to the flat ride into town.

The Wanaka question

Wanaka is over an hour from Queenstown Airport. For solo travelers, a rental car may be more economical if you plan to drive during your stay anyway. For groups, splitting a pre-booked transfer makes the per-person cost more reasonable — get a quote before you book.

The Crown Range road between Queenstown and Wanaka is scenic but demanding in winter. If driving yourself in winter, check conditions and carry chains.

Group economics

For a group of 4-6 heading to Queenstown center, splitting a minivan taxi or transfer often compares well against paying per-person for the shared shuttle, with the advantage of a direct trip — ask for a group rate when you book.

Payment

New Zealand is highly cashless. All transport options accept card payment. NZD can be withdrawn from airport ATMs if needed. Tipping is not customary in New Zealand.

Summary

For central Queenstown, the Orbus public bus is the cheapest option, with the shuttle, taxi, and pre-booked transfer trading off price against convenience. For ski areas and Wanaka, transfers are the standard approach; get a fixed quote before you travel since exact fares for these routes are not published. New Zealand is an expensive country, and transport prices are in line with the general cost of travel here.
