Getting from Queenstown Airport with kids and family

Last updated: February 2026

Queenstown Airport is tiny and manageable. For families, the main considerations are car seats, luggage space (especially with ski gear), and the drive to your accommodation.

The terminal

The terminal is small enough that you cannot get lost. From baggage claim to the exit is a one-minute walk. Luggage trolleys are available. Restrooms are accessible. There is a cafe near arrivals for a quick stop. The entire airport experience with children is brief and low-stress.

Car seats

New Zealand law requires children under 7 to be in an approved child restraint. Taxis are exempt from this requirement, but that does not mean it is advisable to travel without one, especially on winding mountain roads.

Options:

  • Bring a travel car seat. Works with any vehicle.
  • Rent from a car rental company. If you are renting a car, all major agencies offer child seats.
  • Request through a transfer service. Specify the child's age and weight when booking. Confirm availability before arrival.
For the short ride to central Queenstown on a straight road, the risk is lower. For drives to ski areas on mountain roads in winter, a car seat is strongly recommended.

Ski season with kids

Many families visit Queenstown for skiing at Remarkables or Coronet Peak. If you are arriving with ski gear for the whole family, the luggage load is significant. Ski bags, boots, regular luggage, and children do not fit in a standard sedan.

A minivan transfer is the practical solution for ski families. The driver handles the loading, the vehicle has space for everything, and you go directly to your lodge or hotel. Attempting this with a regular taxi may require two cars.

Summer and non-ski visits

In warmer months, luggage is more manageable and the drive is simpler. A standard taxi to Queenstown center works fine for most families. The short distance means children barely have time to get restless.

Accommodation distance

Most central Queenstown accommodation is 10-15 minutes from the airport. Frankton (closer to the airport) is even shorter. Jack's Point is about 15 minutes. Arrowtown is 20-25 minutes. Wanaka is over an hour. The closer to town, the simpler the family transfer.

Practical tips

  • Request a car seat at booking time if using a transfer service
  • For ski trips, book a minivan and specify that you have ski equipment
  • The airport is at lake level but ski areas are at elevation. Dress children in layers so they are comfortable at both
  • The drive to town is on good roads with minimal complexity
  • Card payment is accepted everywhere, no cash needed
  • If arriving in the evening in winter, roads may be icy. A professional driver is preferable to driving yourself in unfamiliar conditions
Queenstown makes the airport experience easy for families. The terminal is small, the town is close, and the main logistical challenge (ski gear) is solved by choosing the right vehicle.
