Managua Airport (MGA) Transfer Guide

Augusto C. Sandino International Airport is located about 11 km east of central Managua. A pre-booked private transfer to central Managua costs $20-40 USD and takes 20-30 minutes. Official airport taxis charge $20-30 USD for the same trip. There is no public bus service from the airport. Most travelers heading to Granada, Leon, or the Pacific beaches will need a longer transfer or shuttle. Pre-booking is recommended because Managua's streets are notoriously difficult to navigate without local knowledge.

MGA is a small airport with one terminal. Immigration can be slow, particularly when multiple international flights arrive close together -- expect 20-45 minutes. You will fill out an immigration form and pay a $10 USD tourist entry card fee (sometimes included in your ticket). After collecting your bags, you pass through customs and exit into a small arrivals area. Outside, taxi drivers and transfer company representatives wait with signs. The area can feel hectic, especially if you arrive on a busy flight.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver meets you inside arrivals with your name on a sign. The vehicle is reserved for you. Prices for central Managua are $20-40 USD depending on vehicle type. For longer trips to Granada ($60-90 USD) or Leon ($70-100 USD), this is often the most practical option.

Hotel pickup: Some hotels and hostels in Managua offer airport pickup, either free or for a fee. Check with your accommodation before arriving.

Rental car: Available at the airport from international companies. Driving in Managua requires confidence -- the city has few street signs and navigation relies on landmarks rather than addresses.

Public transport: There is no direct public bus from the airport to the city center. Local buses pass on the main road outside the airport, but these are crowded chicken buses not suited for travelers with luggage. Not recommended.

However, the area around the airport is poorly lit and not a place to linger. A pre-booked transfer is strongly recommended for night arrivals. Your driver will be inside the terminal waiting, and you avoid any uncertainty about finding transport.

Official airport taxis are usually Toyota sedans or similar, adequate for two people with standard luggage. Families with children and multiple bags should book a larger vehicle in advance. Child car seats are not available in taxis and are rare even in private transfers -- bring your own if your child needs one. If you are heading to a beach destination or Granada with a lot of gear, a minivan transfer is the practical choice.

For pre-booked transfers, drivers wait in the arrivals hall just after you exit customs. The space is small, so spotting your driver is straightforward. For official taxis, the desk is inside the arrivals area before you exit the building. Pay at the desk, then walk outside to your assigned vehicle. Do not accept rides from anyone who approaches you in the parking lot.
