Recife Airport (REC) Transfer Guide: Getting to the City Without the Stress

Recife's Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre International Airport sits about 11 km south of the city center in the Imbiribeira neighborhood. That is close by Brazilian standards, and the ride takes 20-40 minutes outside rush hour. Boa Viagem beach, where many tourists stay, is only about 7 km from the terminal. The one fare here that is officially published is the metro: the Recife metro has a station connected to the terminal and charges a flat R$ 4,25 (Grande Recife Consórcio de Transporte, the metropolitan transport authority). You will land at the single passenger terminal. Immigration for international arrivals is on the upper level and moves at a moderate pace — expect 20-40 minutes depending on flight size. After clearing customs, you exit into the arrivals hall on the ground floor. ATMs from Banco do Brasil and Bradesco are available near the exit, but note that many accept only cards with chip technology. The free airport Wi-Fi works but can be unreliable during busy periods.

The arrivals area has a few cafes and a currency exchange counter, though exchange rates at the airport are poor. If you need Brazilian reais, withdraw from an ATM instead — the rates are significantly better.

Pre-booked private transfer: The most straightforward option. Your driver meets you with a name sign in the arrivals hall, handles luggage, and takes you directly to your accommodation. Air-conditioned vehicles, fixed prices, no negotiation needed.

Airport taxi (cooperative): Official taxis operate from the stand just outside arrivals, using a voucher system with rates set by destination zone, so you pay a known price at the booth rather than watching a meter. The zone tariff is not published anywhere we can point you to — ask at the booth before you commit. This is the safe and regulated option, and generally dearer than the ride-hailing apps.

Ride-hailing apps (99, Uber): Both work well in Recife. Walk to the designated pickup area on the ground floor. Fares are typically lower than the official taxi, but they are set by the app in the moment and quoted to you before you confirm — there is no fixed rate to look up. You need a local SIM or a working data connection. Surge pricing applies during rain and rush hours, which in Recife is often.

Two things that genuinely move the cost: Carnival and major holidays, when app pricing can run several times normal, and rain plus rush hour, which is a common combination in Recife and reliably triggers surge.

Recife airport handles flights until around midnight, and some charter or delayed flights arrive later. After 10 PM, the metro stops running and ride-hailing availability drops. Official taxis remain available 24 hours from the stand outside arrivals, but the queue can be long after late flights.

A pre-booked transfer is the safest and least stressful option for late arrivals. Your driver will track your flight and adjust pickup time if there are delays. Walking around the airport area at night is not recommended — the surrounding neighborhood is not considered safe after dark.

If you are traveling with children, car seats are legally required in Brazil for kids under 7.5 years. Taxis and ride-hailing cars rarely have them. A pre-booked transfer lets you request a child seat in advance.
