Fortaleza Airport to the City – What You Actually Need to Know

Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR) is located about 10 km south of the main beach area (Praia de Iracema, Meireles, Beira Mar). The ride takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic.

Your options: a pre-booked private transfer (from BRL 100–180 / EUR 17–30), a taxi (BRL 60–100 / EUR 10–17), app-based rides like Uber and 99 (BRL 30–60 / EUR 5–10), or a city bus (BRL 4.50 / EUR 0.75). Fortaleza is one of the cheaper Brazilian cities for airport transport.

Fortaleza Airport is a modern terminal that handles both domestic and international flights. After landing, baggage claim is on the ground floor. Immigration for international arrivals is generally efficient — 15–30 minutes in most cases.

The arrivals hall has ATMs, currency exchange (rates are poor — change only what you need), SIM card vendors, and a tourist information desk. Free Wi-Fi is available but can be slow during peak hours.

The exit leads to the ground transportation area where you will find the taxi stand, a waiting area for pre-booked transfers, and the rideshare pickup zone.

Fortaleza is affordable by international standards. The airport taxi cooperative (Coopertaxi or similar) operates with fixed posted rates to major destinations. These are displayed at the taxi stand — check the board before getting in.

A standard taxi to Praia de Iracema or Meireles costs approximately BRL 60–100 (EUR 10–17). This is a fixed cooperative rate, not metered.

Uber and 99 (Brazil's popular ride app) are significantly cheaper — often BRL 30–60 (EUR 5–10) for the same trip. However, there are complications:

• Pickup is outside the terminal (follow signs to the designated area)
• Surge pricing during peak hours or holidays can push prices higher
• Some drivers may cancel if they see the pickup is at the airport

Fortaleza receives international flights from Lisbon, Miami, and other hubs that can arrive late in the evening. Domestic flights run until around midnight.

Taxis are available 24/7 at the airport cooperative stand. Uber and 99 have reasonable late-night coverage in Fortaleza, though wait times may be longer after midnight.

The city bus does not run late at night. For arrivals after 22:00, stick to taxi, rideshare, or a pre-booked transfer.

Late-night traffic is minimal, cutting the drive to the beach area to a smooth 15–25 minutes. A pre-booked transfer is recommended for late arrivals — your driver will be waiting regardless of delays.

Brazilian law requires children under 7.5 years old to use an appropriate child seat, and children under 10 must ride in the back seat. Standard taxis and rideshare vehicles do not carry child seats.

For families heading to beach resorts like Beach Park or Cumbuco, the longer drive makes a pre-booked transfer especially worthwhile — fixed price, comfortable vehicle, and car seats included.

Luggage space in standard taxis is adequate for 2–3 bags. Families with more luggage should request a minivan or larger vehicle.

Taxis: The cooperative taxi stand is outside the arrivals exit, clearly marked. Fixed rates are posted on a board. Tell the dispatcher your destination and pay the posted rate.

Uber / 99: Follow signs to the designated rideshare pickup area, which is a short walk from the terminal. Request your ride from the app once you reach the pickup zone.

Bus: The bus stop is a few minutes' walk from the terminal. Buses accept the Bilhete Unico card — you cannot pay with large bills.

Choose a cooperative taxi if: you prefer not to use apps, want a straightforward experience at the stand, and do not mind paying a bit more for convenience.
