How much it costs to get from Queenstown Airport to your destination

Last updated: February 2026

Queenstown Airport is 8 km from the town center. Costs for the short town ride are modest. Prices increase significantly for ski areas and Wanaka.

Prices to Queenstown town center

Shared shuttle: $15-25 NZD ($9-16 USD) per person. Multiple stops.

Taxi (metered): $30-45 NZD ($18-28 USD). Direct to your accommodation.

Uber (when available): $25-40 NZD ($15-25 USD). Inconsistent availability.

Pre-booked transfer (sedan): $40-60 NZD ($25-37 USD). Fixed price, driver waiting.

Prices to other destinations

  • Frankton (near airport): $15-25 NZD by taxi
  • Jack's Point: $25-40 NZD by taxi, $35-55 by transfer
  • Arrowtown (20 km): $50-70 NZD by taxi, $55-80 by transfer
  • Coronet Peak ski area (18 km): $50-75 NZD by transfer
  • Remarkables ski area (25 km): $60-90 NZD by transfer
  • Wanaka (110 km): $200-300 NZD by transfer
  • Glenorchy (45 km): $100-150 NZD by transfer

Why ski area transfers cost more

Ski areas are accessed via mountain roads that add distance, time, and complexity (especially in winter). The roads to Remarkables and Coronet Peak involve altitude gain and potentially icy conditions. Drivers need appropriate vehicles and equipment. This justifies the higher pricing compared to the flat ride into town.

The Wanaka question

Wanaka is over an hour from Queenstown Airport. At $200-300 NZD for a transfer, the cost is significant. For solo travelers, a rental car may be more economical if you plan to drive during your stay anyway. For groups, splitting a transfer makes the per-person cost more reasonable.

The Crown Range road between Queenstown and Wanaka is scenic but demanding in winter. If driving yourself in winter, check conditions and carry chains.

Group economics

A minivan for a group of 4-6 to Queenstown center costs $60-90 NZD, splitting to $10-22 per person. This is comparable to or cheaper than the shared shuttle, with the advantage of a direct trip. For groups, private transport is often the best value.

Payment

New Zealand is highly cashless. All transport options accept card payment. NZD can be withdrawn from airport ATMs if needed. Tipping is not customary in New Zealand.

Summary

For central Queenstown, transport is affordable and the choice is between saving a few dollars (shuttle) or paying a bit more for convenience (taxi or transfer). For ski areas and Wanaka, transfers are the standard approach and the cost reflects the distance and driving conditions. New Zealand is an expensive country, and transport prices are in line with the general cost of travel here.
