YAO - Yaounde

Late night arrivals at Yaounde Nsimalen Airport

Several international flights to Yaounde arrive late at night or in the early morning hours. Airlines from Europe and the Middle East frequently land between 10 PM and 2 AM. If this is your arrival window, here is what to expect.

What is open

Nsimalen Airport is a small terminal with limited facilities at any hour. Late at night, nearly everything is closed — no restaurants, no shops, no currency exchange. ATMs may be available but are not always functional. Have some CFA francs ready before you land, or arrange for your hotel or transfer to handle currency exchange.

Immigration can still take 30-60 minutes for international arrivals even late at night, as staffing is minimal and processing is manual.

Transport options after dark

Pre-booked transfers are by far the best option for late-night arrivals. Your driver will be waiting when you exit, and the price and vehicle are confirmed in advance. At an airport with limited infrastructure and no official taxi queue, this removes significant stress.

Taxis are present outside the terminal at all hours, but late at night the number drops considerably. The drivers who remain tend to charge higher fares, knowing they have less competition. Expect to pay 15,000-25,000 CFA to Yaounde, compared to 10,000-20,000 during the day. You will need to negotiate, and doing so tired and in the dark is not ideal.

Shared taxis and minibuses do not operate from the airport late at night. This option is effectively unavailable after 9 PM.

The drive at night

The 25 km road from Nsimalen to Yaounde is a main highway, but it is not well-lit outside the immediate airport and city areas. The road surface varies — some sections are good, others have potholes that are harder to see at night. Other vehicles may drive without full headlights. An experienced local driver who knows the road is important.

The positive side: traffic is virtually nonexistent late at night. The drive that takes 30-50 minutes during the day can be done in 20-30 minutes after 10 PM.

Safety

Yaounde is generally safer than Douala, but standard precautions apply. Do not walk outside the terminal to find transport — let transport come to you at the exit. Keep your belongings close and valuables out of sight. Avoid changing money with individuals outside the terminal.

Police checkpoints along the highway are common at night. Your driver will handle these, but have your passport and any visa documentation easily accessible.

Our recommendation

Book a private transfer before you arrive. Late-night transport at Nsimalen is not dangerous, but it is limited and unpredictable. Having a confirmed driver eliminates the most stressful part of arriving in a new city after dark.
