YAO - Yaounde

Family and kids guide for Yaounde Nsimalen Airport transfers

Traveling with children through Nsimalen Airport requires extra planning. The airport and local transport infrastructure are not set up with families as a priority, so knowing what to expect helps.

At the airport

Nsimalen is a basic terminal. Restrooms are available but facilities specifically for families, such as changing rooms or nursing areas, are minimal or nonexistent. Bring your own changing supplies. There is a small cafe for drinks and snacks, but the selection is limited. Immigration and customs can take 30-60 minutes when flights overlap, which is a long time to stand with young children. Having snacks and entertainment ready for the wait is essential.

Child seats

This is the critical issue. Child car seats are extremely uncommon in Cameroon. Taxis will not have them. Shared vehicles will not have them. Even many private transfer services do not carry them as standard. If a child seat is essential for you (and it should be for young children), contact your transfer provider well in advance and confirm explicitly that they can supply one. Bringing your own travel car seat from home is the most reliable option for families with young children.

The ride to Yaounde

The 25 km drive takes 30-50 minutes. The road from Nsimalen to Yaounde is a main highway but can have rough patches, potholes, and unpredictable traffic. Other drivers may not follow lane discipline. This is normal for the region but can be unsettling if you are not used to it. A private transfer with an experienced driver who knows the road is the safest option for families.

Luggage

Families typically travel with more bags, a pushchair, and possibly a car seat. Taxis at the airport vary in size and boot space. A shared taxi will almost certainly not accommodate family-sized luggage. When booking a private transfer, specify exactly how many bags, pushchairs, and car seats you have so the provider sends an appropriate vehicle. A minivan or SUV is often the right choice for families.

Health considerations

Cameroon requires yellow fever vaccination for all travelers, including children over 9 months. Malaria is present in the Yaounde region, so ensure your family has appropriate prophylaxis as advised by your doctor. Carry bottled water for the journey, especially for young children. The airport water may not be safe to drink.

Our recommendation

Book a private transfer with the largest vehicle you can reasonably justify. Confirm child seat availability or bring your own. Have snacks, water, and entertainment for the airport wait and the drive. Nsimalen is not a difficult airport, but it lacks the family infrastructure that makes travel with children smooth. A bit of preparation makes a significant difference.
