Kempegowda International Airport – Getting to Bangalore City

Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) is located about 40 km north of Bangalore city center. That distance makes the airport-to-city journey one of the longer ones in India — expect 60–120 minutes depending on traffic, which in Bangalore can be severe. Your main options are prepaid taxi, app-based cab (Ola/Uber), BMTC Vayu Vajra airport bus, or a pre-booked private transfer. A taxi to central Bangalore costs roughly 800–1,500 INR (9–17 EUR). The Vayu Vajra bus is the budget option at 250–350 INR (3–4 EUR).

BLR has two terminals — Terminal 1 (domestic) and Terminal 2 (international, opened 2023). Both are modern and well-maintained. Immigration at Terminal 2 is reasonably efficient with e-gates for Indian passport holders. Baggage delivery times vary but are generally acceptable.

After clearing customs, you enter a spacious arrivals hall with ATMs, currency exchange counters, SIM card vendors (Airtel and Jio are the most reliable), and a Starbucks. Free airport Wi-Fi is available for 30 minutes.

The transport options are well-signposted. Follow signs to the prepaid taxi counter, the cab pickup area, or the bus stand depending on your chosen mode of transport.

Prepaid taxis operate from a counter inside the arrivals hall. You state your destination, pay the fixed fare, receive a receipt, and are assigned a car outside. This eliminates haggling.

Ola and Uber work well at BLR but surge pricing during peak hours (morning 8–10 AM, evening 5–8 PM) can push fares above the prepaid taxi rate. The pickup point is at the designated cab area outside the terminal. Wait times of 10–20 minutes are normal.

BMTC Vayu Vajra buses are the best budget option. These are air-conditioned Volvo buses running to major parts of the city — Majestic, Whitefield, Electronic City, Koramangala, and others. The bus stand is just outside the terminal. Buses run from roughly 4:00 AM to midnight, with frequencies of 15–30 minutes on popular routes.

Pre-booked transfers are the premium option. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall, helps with luggage, and takes you directly to your destination in a confirmed vehicle. Particularly useful for first-time visitors, families, or business travelers.

Bangalore's distance from its airport means transport costs are higher than at most Indian airports:

Uber and Ola prices vary significantly with surge pricing. The range shown reflects typical variation — during extreme traffic or rain, expect the higher end.

BLR handles many international flights arriving between 22:00 and 04:00. The airport operates 24/7 and remains fully functional at night. Prepaid taxis and Ola/Uber are available around the clock, though wait times for app-based cabs can be longer after midnight. Vayu Vajra buses stop running around midnight and resume at 4:00 AM. If you land between midnight and 4 AM, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is your best bet. The upside of late-night travel is dramatically less traffic — the ride to the city can be as quick as 45 minutes.

Standard taxis at BLR are sedans (Maruti Dzire or similar). Families with more than two large bags may need an SUV, which is available through the prepaid counter or by booking an Uber XL / Ola Prime SUV. For child seats, you will need to pre-book a transfer and request one — taxis and ride-hailing cars in India do not carry them. The Vayu Vajra bus has luggage space underneath and is manageable for families, though navigating bus stops in the city with toddlers and bags can be challenging.
