SKP - Skopje

Navigating Skopje Airport with Family and Kids

Skopje Alexander the Great Airport is a modern, manageable terminal. The airport itself is not the challenge for families — it is the 22 km ride to the city that needs planning.

Inside the terminal

SKP is a single terminal with a clear layout. The walk from arrivals to the exit is short. Baggage claim is on the ground level and trolleys are available. There are clean bathrooms in the terminal. No dedicated family room exists, but the terminal is small enough that you are never far from facilities.

If you need to buy supplies — snacks, water, a SIM card — there are limited options in arrivals. The departures level has more shops, but you cannot easily access it from arrivals.

Car seats

North Macedonia requires child car seats by law, but enforcement in taxis is inconsistent. Airport taxis do not typically carry car seats. Your options:

  • Bring your own car seat. The most reliable approach, especially for younger children.
  • Request one with a pre-booked transfer. Reputable transfer providers can arrange car seats with advance notice. Confirm the type and confirm again the day before.
  • Rent a car with a car seat. Major rental agencies at SKP can provide child seats for an additional fee.
For the airport bus, there are no car seat options — children sit on regular seats.

The 22 km ride

This is a longer airport-to-city ride than many European airports. The road is a well-maintained highway (A1 motorway for most of the route), and the ride takes 25-35 minutes. It is a smooth, mostly straight drive — comfortable for children and unlikely to cause motion sickness.

Traffic can slow things down during Skopje rush hours (roughly 7:30-9:00 AM and 4:30-6:30 PM), potentially extending the ride to 40-45 minutes.

Luggage space

Families with strollers, car seats, and multiple suitcases need a vehicle with adequate cargo space. A standard taxi sedan will accommodate two large suitcases and carry-ons. For families of four or more with full luggage, a larger vehicle is necessary.

The airport bus has limited luggage storage and is not practical with a stroller, multiple bags, and children to manage.

A pre-booked minivan transfer is the straightforward solution for families with significant luggage. Specify everything when booking: number of passengers, suitcases, strollers, and car seats needed.

Why a pre-booked transfer makes sense for families at SKP

The 22 km distance changes the calculation. At a close-in airport, you can improvise. At SKP, having a confirmed vehicle with adequate space, a car seat arranged, and a driver who knows your hotel address saves genuine stress. The cost ($25-35 for a minivan) is modest for a family, and the alternative — wrestling luggage, children, and a stroller onto a bus or into a tight taxi — is not a good start to a holiday.

If your accommodation offers airport pickup, that is worth checking first. Some Skopje hotels arrange transfers at reasonable rates.
