SKP - Skopje

Late Night Arrivals at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport (SKP)

Skopje airport receives a fair number of late-evening flights, particularly budget carriers like Wizz Air that operate on tight schedules. If your flight lands after 10 PM, the 22 km to the city requires planning.

The bus situation at night

The Vardar Express airport bus operates in coordination with the flight schedule, but it does not run all night. The last bus typically departs after the last scheduled arrival of the evening, often around 11 PM-midnight. If your flight is delayed past this window, the bus will not be there.

Do not count on the bus for flights scheduled after 9:30 PM, as any delay could leave you without this option.

Taxi availability

For scheduled late flights, taxis do show up at the airport stand. Drivers monitor the arrivals board and time their presence accordingly. For a flight landing at 10 or 11 PM, you should find taxis available.

The picture changes after midnight. If your flight is delayed and lands at 1 AM, taxi availability drops sharply. You may find one or two drivers, or you may find none. Remember — the airport is 22 km from the city. Taxi drivers weigh the cost of waiting against the probability of a fare, and late at night that calculation does not always favor you.

The 22 km problem

This distance is the core issue for late arrivals at SKP. At an airport 5 km from the city, worst case, you could find a way. At SKP, there is nothing between the airport and Skopje — no hotels, no restaurants, no nearby town. If you have no transport, you are genuinely stuck in a quiet area with no alternatives within walking distance.

This is not meant to alarm, just to emphasize that having confirmed transport matters more at SKP than at many other European airports.

Why pre-booking is essential for late flights

A pre-booked transfer eliminates the risk entirely. Your driver tracks your flight in real time and adjusts for delays. Whether you land at 10 PM or 1 AM, someone is there. The fare is fixed — no late-night surcharges, no negotiation with a driver who knows they are your only option.

The cost is $20-30 to the city center, comparable to what a taxi would charge if one were available. For late arrivals, this is not a convenience — it is a necessity.

If you arrive unprepared

If you land late without a booking and find no taxis:

  • Check if airport information staff can call a taxi company
  • Call your hotel — some will arrange a driver even at short notice
  • Check Yandex Go or any local ride app, though coverage at the airport at night is poor
  • Do not attempt to walk toward the city. The highway is not pedestrian-friendly, especially at night
The terminal stays open for arriving passengers, so you will not be locked outside. But spending hours in an empty terminal waiting for morning transport is avoidable with 5 minutes of pre-trip planning.
