Public Ferry vs. Private Transfer from Male Velana Airport

First, correct a common myth: Velana International Airport does have taxis, and they drive. The Sinamale Bridge, opened in August 2018, connects Male, the airport and Hulhumale by road. A lot of travel advice still insists the Maldives is boat-only, and for reaching Male that has not been true for years. So the real comparison for getting into the city is between the ferry, a taxi over the bridge, and a private speedboat. For resort transfers, the comparison barely exists — the resort's arrangement is effectively your only option.

Public Ferry

The ferry between the airport and Male is affordable and functional. It runs every 10 minutes from 06:00 to 23:59 and every 30 minutes from 00:00 to 06:00 — around the clock, not just during the day, which is another point older guides get wrong (Maldives Airports Company Limited). The crossing takes about 10 minutes. The boats are basic but seaworthy. You board at the jetty, a short walk from arrivals, and buy a ticket at the counter. The limitations are real. It can be crowded when multiple flights arrive simultaneously. There is no luggage assistance. And once you reach the Male ferry terminal, you still need to get to your hotel on foot or by local taxi.

Taxi Over the Bridge

The simplest door-to-door option, available at any hour, and the one most guides do not mention. It is a short road journey of a few kilometres. Confirm the fare or the meter before you set off.

Private Speedboat Transfer

A private speedboat is priced per boat rather than per person and can be arranged for any time. It picks you up from the airport jetty and drops you closer to your hotel. Get the quote confirmed when you book.

The advantages are no waiting, no crowds, luggage handled, and a drop-off where you actually want it. Because it is charged per boat, the per-person maths improves sharply with three or more people.

For Resort Transfers

If you are heading to a resort, this choice is largely made for you. Most resorts have their own transfer arrangements using their branded speedboats or contracted seaplanes. Arranging your own independent speedboat to a resort island is theoretically possible but rarely practical or cheaper. Stick with whatever your resort offers.

When the Ferry Wins

The ferry makes sense for solo travellers or couples heading to Male city, at any hour — it runs all night, so a late arrival does not rule it out. If you are doing the Maldives on a budget, staying in local island guesthouses, and travelling light, the ferry is the obvious choice. It is safe, regular, and the cheapest way across.

When a Private Transfer Wins

Private transfers win when you arrive late at night, have significant luggage, are traveling with children, or simply want the smoothest possible start to your trip. After a long international flight, the difference between navigating a crowded ferry terminal with bags and stepping onto a dedicated boat is significant.

If you are going to Male city with a backpack, take the ferry — it runs all night, so the hour does not decide this for you. If you are travelling with a family or carrying more than one bag per person, take a taxi over the bridge or book a private speedboat to be dropped nearer your hotel. And if you are heading to a resort, none of this applies: take what the resort has arranged, and make sure you know what it costs before you fly.
