Velana International Airport is on Hulhule Island, next to Male city. Start by discarding the thing most guides still say: there is a road. The Sinamale Bridge, opened in August 2018, connects Male, the airport and Hulhumale, so getting into the city no longer requires a boat at all. Getting to a resort still does, and that is where the money goes.
A note on why this page has few numbers
The Maldives publishes remarkably little. Resort transfers are priced by each resort individually, seaplane seats are sold through resorts rather than at a public tariff, and even the airport ferry fare is not listed on the airport's own website. Any page that gives you a confident dollar table for all of this is guessing. We would rather tell you exactly what to ask and who to ask than invent a range you will budget against and then discover was wrong.

Getting to Male City
The ferry runs between the airport and Male around the clock — every 10 minutes from 06:00 to 23:59, and every 30 minutes from 00:00 to 06:00 (Maldives Airports Company Limited). The crossing takes roughly 10 minutes. Buy your ticket at the ticketing counter at the jetty; it is the cheapest way across by a wide margin.
A taxi over the bridge is a short, normal road journey and works at any hour. Confirm the fare or the meter before you set off.
MTCC buses run an Airport Express and an Airport–Hulhumale service roughly every 30 minutes. Cheapest road option, and genuinely useful given how many budget travellers now stay in Hulhumale.
A private speedboat is priced per boat rather than per person, so the arithmetic improves with group size. Worth it if you want dropping closer to your hotel or you are travelling heavy.
Getting to Resorts
This is the expensive part, and the price is set by your resort, not by a tariff:
- North Male Atoll (closest resorts): speedboat, roughly 15-45 minutes
- South Male Atoll: speedboat, roughly 45-90 minutes
- Ari Atoll: seaplane, roughly 25-40 minutes flying
- Baa Atoll (UNESCO biosphere): seaplane, roughly 30-40 minutes flying
- Noonu / Raa Atoll: seaplane
- Far southern atolls (Laamu, Addu): domestic flight plus speedboat
Transfers are normally quoted per person and round trip. Ask your resort for the exact figure in writing when you book the room. It is frequently a large fraction of the total holiday cost, and unlike almost anywhere else in the world you cannot shop around on arrival — the resort's boat is the only way to the resort's island.
What is Included
Resort transfers usually include meet-and-greet at the airport and lounge access at the seaplane terminal if you are waiting for a connection. Some luxury resorts include transfers in the room rate. Budget and mid-range resorts almost always charge separately. Always confirm what is included when you book your stay — this single question is worth more than any price estimate we could print.
Hidden Costs to Watch For
Seaplane luggage allowances are tighter than your international flight's, set by the operator, and overages are charged — check the allowance and the excess rate before you pack. If a late arrival pushes your seaplane to the next morning, the transit hotel may or may not be covered by the resort; establish that in advance. Domestic flights to distant atolls sometimes carry separate luggage fees.
The Bottom Line
Male is cheap and easy to reach: ferry, bus, or a taxi over the bridge, at any hour. Resorts are expensive to reach, the cost is set by the resort, and it is not negotiable once you land. Get that number in writing before you book the room, and the Maldives holds no financial surprises.
