Airport taxi (negotiated on the spot): there is no meter and no published tariff, so the fare is whatever you agree. Drivers start high and expect you to counter. We deliberately do not print a 'going rate': nobody publishes one, and a figure here would anchor your negotiation to a number we cannot stand behind. Ask two or three drivers and compare - that is your real price discovery.
Hotel shuttle: Some hotels include airport pickup in the room rate. Others charge for it. Ask when booking your hotel - and get the amount in writing.
Currency matters
Zimbabwe operates a dual-currency system. USD is widely accepted and preferred by most transport providers. If you are paying in Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), confirm the exchange rate being used before agreeing. The parallel market rate and official rate can differ, and this affects what you actually pay.
Carrying small USD notes ($1, $5, $10) is helpful for tipping and exact payment. Getting change for a $50 or $100 note from a taxi driver is not always easy.
What affects the price
- Time of day: Late night arrivals (after 10 PM) will generally cost 20-30% more for taxis, since fewer drivers are available and they know it.
- Destination within Harare: the city centre (Avondale, central business district) is the baseline. Going further out to suburbs like Borrowdale or Mount Pleasant costs more - agree the price for your actual address, not for 'town'.
- Vehicle type: A basic sedan is cheaper than an SUV. If you do not need the space, do not pay for it.
- Negotiation: With taxis, your first quote is not the final price. Polite but firm negotiation is normal and expected.
Tipping
Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated. For a pre-booked transfer where the driver is helpful with bags and provides a smooth ride, a small tip in USD is a reasonable gesture. For taxis where you have already negotiated the fare, tipping is less common but rounding up is a nice gesture.
Bottom line
Get a transfer quote before you fly. It is the only way to know the cost of the airport-to-city journey in advance, and it gives you the best combination of a fair price and certainty. If you are comfortable negotiating and arriving during daytime, a taxi works too - but ask several drivers rather than accepting the first number, because the first number is not the price, it is the opening bid.
