Several flights arrive at HRE in the late evening or after midnight — connections from Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, and Dubai often land between 9 PM and 1 AM. If you are on one of these, here is what to expect.
The airport after dark
The terminal stays open for arriving flights, but it empties out quickly once passengers clear immigration. There are no 24-hour cafes or lounges landside. The currency exchange counter may be closed. ATMs are available but not always stocked or functional at night. Once you exit arrivals, the surroundings are quiet.
Transport at night
This is where late arrivals become a real consideration. During the day, taxis are easy to find at HRE. After about 10 PM, the number of available drivers drops sharply. Those who remain know they have leverage, and prices reflect that — expect to be quoted $40-$60 USD or more to the city centre, compared to $30-$50 during the day.
Ride-hailing apps, already unreliable at this airport during the day, are even less useful at night. Do not plan around getting an Uber from HRE at midnight.
Why a pre-booked transfer matters at night
During the day, you have options and can be flexible. At night, your margin for error shrinks. A pre-booked transfer means someone is monitoring your flight, waiting for you regardless of delays, and you walk out to a confirmed ride at a price you already agreed on.
The cost of a late-night pre-booked transfer is similar to a daytime one — $25-$45 USD to central Harare. Compare that to negotiating with the one remaining taxi driver at midnight, and the value is clear.
The drive at night
The airport road is a well-lit dual carriageway for most of the route into Harare. Traffic is minimal at night, so the drive takes about 15-20 minutes. The route is straightforward and generally safe. Your driver will likely be the only car on the road for stretches.
What if your flight is severely delayed?
Flights sometimes arrive hours late. If you have a pre-booked transfer, the driver or service will monitor your flight and adjust. If you are relying on a taxi, a 2 AM arrival at HRE could mean a genuinely long wait or no available transport at all.
Practical checklist for late arrivals
- Book a transfer before you fly — this is not optional for late-night arrivals
- Have your driver's phone number saved offline (WhatsApp preferred)
- Carry small USD bills in case you need them
- Download any confirmation documents before landing — airport WiFi is unreliable
- Eat before you land or bring something — there is nothing open landside at night
- If your hotel is expecting you, confirm the late arrival so they hold the room
