Victoria Falls Airport Transfers: What You Actually Need to Know

Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) is about 18 km south of Victoria Falls town. A pre-booked private transfer costs roughly 25-40 USD per vehicle. There is no public transport from the airport. Taxis exist but are informal, and most lodges arrange their own pickups. If your accommodation has not organized transport for you, booking a transfer in advance is the safest approach.

VFA is a small, modern terminal that was expanded in 2016. Immigration can take a while — visa-on-arrival is available for many nationalities, but the queue moves slowly when a full plane arrives. Have your visa fee ready in USD cash (30 USD for single-entry for most countries, 45 USD for double-entry KAZA UniVisa covering Zimbabwe and Zambia).

Baggage claim is a single belt. Once you clear customs, you step into a small arrivals hall with a currency exchange counter and a couple of ATMs. The ATMs accept international cards but sometimes run out of cash. Bring USD — it is the most widely accepted currency in Victoria Falls and saves you conversion headaches.

Phone signal is available (Econet and NetOne are the main networks), but data can be slow. The airport does not have reliable public WiFi.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver meets you in the arrivals area, helps with bags, and takes you directly to your accommodation. Fixed price, typically 25-40 USD for a standard vehicle to Victoria Falls town. This is the most reliable independent option.

Informal taxis: There are usually a few drivers outside the terminal. Prices are negotiable, and you should agree on a fare before getting in. Expect to pay 20-35 USD to town. The vehicles and service quality vary considerably.

Car rental: Available at the airport, but most visitors to Victoria Falls do not need a car. The town is small and walkable, and activities are organized with transport included.

If your flight arrives after 18:00, have transport pre-arranged. Either confirm with your lodge or book a transfer. This is not a city airport where you can always find a ride.

Victoria Falls is a popular family destination, and the airport handles safari luggage well — oversized bags, camera equipment, and the like are routine. If you are traveling with children, a pre-booked transfer lets you request appropriate seating.

For families with young children, the drive from the airport to town takes about 20-25 minutes. The road is paved and in reasonable condition. Some lodges are located further out along the Zambezi, adding 10-15 minutes to the drive.

The arrivals area at VFA is compact. Pre-booked transfer drivers and lodge representatives wait just outside the exit doors, usually holding a sign with your name or the lodge name. You will see them immediately.

Informal taxi drivers tend to approach you as you come out. If you have a pre-arranged pickup, walk past them and look for your name board. If you are taking an informal taxi, take a moment to assess the options rather than going with the first person who approaches.

Book a private transfer if: your lodge does not provide transport, you are arriving late, or you want certainty about pricing and vehicle quality.
