Delhi Airport (DEL) – Getting to the City Center Without Overpaying

Indira Gandhi International Airport is about 16 km from Connaught Place (central New Delhi). The Airport Express Metro gets you there in about 20 minutes for INR 60 (Delhi Airport / DMRC) — a flat single-journey fare, with 10% off if you use a stored-value card.

The pre-paid taxi counter runs on the Delhi Traffic Police tariff: INR 40 for the first kilometre, then INR 17 per kilometre for a non-AC cab (AC costs more per km), plus INR 15 per piece of baggage and an INR 15 booth service charge. Over the roughly 16 km to Connaught Place that works out to a little over INR 300 in a non-AC cab before extras — the counter calculates and prints your exact fare, so you never negotiate. Delhi airport has excellent transport connections by Indian standards. The Airport Express Metro line is fast, clean, and reliable. The main challenge is traffic — Delhi's roads are heavily congested during peak hours (8–11 AM, 5–9 PM), which can turn a 30-minute taxi ride into 90 minutes.

DEL has three terminals. Terminal 3 (T3) handles most international flights and is the newest and largest. Terminals 1 and 2 handle domestic flights (T1 for low-cost carriers, T2 reopened for additional capacity).

At Terminal 3, after immigration (which can take 20–60 minutes for international arrivals) and baggage claim, you exit into a large arrivals hall. You will immediately see currency exchange counters, SIM card vendors, and the pre-paid taxi counter on the left.

The arrivals hall is busy but well-organized. Expect to be approached by taxi touts — politely decline and head to the official counters or your pre-arranged pickup point.

The Airport Express Metro station is connected to T3 by a covered walkway — follow signs for "Airport Express Line." The walk takes about 5–8 minutes from the arrivals exit.

The Airport Express Metro is the standout option. It is a dedicated line (not the regular Delhi Metro) that runs from T3 to New Delhi Railway Station via Shivaji Stadium and other stops. Trains are air-conditioned, clean, and frequent (every 10–15 minutes). From New Delhi Metro station, you can walk to Connaught Place or transfer to other Metro lines.

The pre-paid taxi counter inside the terminal eliminates bargaining. You state your destination, pay at the counter, receive a receipt, and are assigned a driver. Vehicles range from small cars to air-conditioned sedans.

The fare is not a mystery: the Delhi Traffic Police publishes the prepaid tariff for IGI Airport — INR 40 for the first kilometre, then INR 17 per kilometre for non-AC cabs, with AC charged at a higher per-km rate, plus INR 15 per bag, an INR 15 service charge for running the booth, and a 25% night charge from 11 PM to 5 AM. The counter does the arithmetic for your destination and hands you a receipt for the total. Uber and Ola work well at Delhi airport. There is a designated pickup area at T3 — follow signs for "App-Based Cab." Fares are transparent and usually slightly cheaper than pre-paid taxis.

The Metro is the one fixed number here: INR 60 covers the Airport Express to New Delhi station regardless of how bad the traffic is. Onward journeys on the regular Metro lines cost a small additional fare depending on distance.

For the pre-paid taxi, work it off the police tariff rather than a memorised price: INR 40 for the first km, INR 17 per km after that for a non-AC cab (more for AC), plus INR 15 a bag and the INR 15 booth charge, plus 25% between 11 PM and 5 AM. A ~16 km run to Connaught Place therefore starts a little over INR 300 non-AC. The counter calculates it for you and the receipt is your proof.

Many international flights arrive at Delhi between 11 PM and 5 AM. The Airport Express Metro runs from approximately 4:45 AM to 11:30 PM — if you land outside these hours, you need a road transfer.

Late-night options include:

• Pre-paid taxis: The counter operates 24 hours
• Uber/Ola: Available but with fewer drivers; wait times of 10–20 minutes are common after midnight
• Pre-booked transfers: Your driver waits regardless of time

The good news: Delhi traffic is light between 11 PM and 6 AM, and you can reach most central locations in 25–35 minutes. The pre-paid taxi counter adds a 25% night charge between 11 PM and 5 AM, which is part of the published Delhi Traffic Police tariff — not a driver improvising.

The Airport Express Metro allows luggage, but navigating escalators and platforms with large bags and children can be cumbersome. For families with more than two bags or small children, a taxi or transfer is more practical.

Delhi taxis rarely have child seats. Seatbelt usage in the back seat is inconsistent. A pre-booked private transfer is the only reliable way to get a child seat — request it when booking.

For large families or groups, a minivan or Innova (a popular Indian MPV) can be requested through the pre-paid counter or a transfer service. An Innova seats 6–7 comfortably and handles luggage well. At the prepaid counter the fare still follows the police tariff for the vehicle class; through a transfer company it is quoted when you book.

Airport Express Metro: Follow signs from the T3 arrivals hall — the station is a 5–8 minute walk via a covered, air-conditioned walkway. For T1, a free shuttle connects to the Metro station.

Pre-paid taxi: After paying at the counter (located in the arrivals hall at T3), you are directed to the taxi pickup area outside. A counter staff member may walk you to your assigned vehicle.

Uber/Ola: Follow signs to the "App-Based Cab" pickup area at the ground level of T3. The app shows your driver's location. At T1, the pickup is outside the terminal exit.

Pre-booked transfer: Drivers typically wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign, or just outside the exit. Your booking confirmation will specify the exact meeting point.

Take the Airport Express Metro if: you are traveling light, heading to central Delhi (near Connaught Place or New Delhi Railway Station), and want the fastest, cheapest option. It is genuinely excellent.

Take a pre-paid taxi if: you have moderate luggage, are heading to areas not near the Metro line, or prefer door-to-door service at a reasonable price.

Book a private transfer if: you are traveling with family and children, need a child seat, arriving late at night, or want guaranteed comfort and a known driver.

Use Uber/Ola if: you have a working Indian SIM card or data connection and want app-based convenience at the lowest road-based price.

For most first-time visitors to Delhi, the Airport Express Metro to New Delhi station followed by a short Uber/auto-rickshaw to your hotel is the smartest combination — fast, cheap, and avoids the worst of Delhi traffic.
