Arriving at Delhi Airport Late at Night – Your Best Options

Last updated: March 2026

Delhi airport is one of the busiest in Asia for overnight arrivals. A huge number of international flights from Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia land between 11 PM and 5 AM. The terminal is fully operational at these hours, and getting to the city is straightforward — you just need to plan around the Metro's operating hours.

What is open after midnight

Terminal 3 operates 24 hours and remains busy through the night. After midnight you will find:

  • Immigration and customs fully staffed (expect queues from simultaneous arrivals)
  • Currency exchange counters open
  • ATMs in the arrivals hall
  • SIM card vendors (Airtel, Jio) — some may close after 1 AM
  • The pre-paid taxi counter — open 24 hours
  • A few food outlets and a Starbucks (hours vary)
Free Wi-Fi is available in the terminal, which helps if you need to contact your driver or book a ride.

Transport options after dark

| Option | Availability | Fare to Connaught Place (INR) | Fare (EUR) | |--------|-------------|------------------------------|------------| | Airport Express Metro | Until ~11:30 PM only | 60 | 0.65 | | Pre-paid taxi (counter) | 24 hours | 500–650 (night rate) | 5.40–7.00 | | Uber / Ola | Available, fewer drivers | 350–600 | 3.75–6.50 | | Pre-booked transfer | Always available | 1,200–1,800 | 13–19 |

The Airport Express Metro stops running around 11:30 PM. If your flight lands after this, road transport is your only option.

Pre-paid taxis apply a night surcharge of approximately 25%, so a daytime fare of INR 400 becomes about INR 500. The counter operates all night and vehicles are available, though you may wait 10–20 minutes during peak arrival windows (midnight to 2 AM when multiple flights land).

Uber and Ola have fewer drivers after midnight. Wait times of 10–25 minutes are typical. However, there is usually no surge pricing at these hours, making rides cheaper than daytime peak.

Safety at night

Terminal 3 is well-lit and has 24-hour security. The pre-paid taxi area is monitored. Key safety tips:

  • Use only the pre-paid taxi counter or your pre-booked driver — never accept rides from people approaching you in the terminal
  • Share your ride details with someone at your hotel
  • Keep your hotel address written down in both English and Hindi
  • Have small-denomination INR notes ready — you do not want to depend on a late-night driver making change
Delhi's roads at night are much emptier than during the day. The drive to central Delhi takes only 25–35 minutes after midnight — compared to 60–90 minutes during the day. Driving standards at night can be poor (dim headlights, speeding), but the major airport highway is well-maintained and lit.

The best late-night strategy

If you value certainty and comfort, pre-book a transfer. Your driver tracks your flight, waits however long immigration takes, and drives you door-to-door. For budget travelers, the pre-paid taxi counter is reliable and safe. Either way, you benefit from Delhi's clear nighttime roads — arriving at your hotel in under 30 minutes while the city sleeps.
