Ahmedabad Airport to City Centre — What You Actually Need to Know

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) is about 14 km north of Ahmedabad city centre. The ride takes 25 to 50 minutes depending on the notorious Ahmedabad traffic, which can be intense during peak hours. You have several options: pre-paid taxi, app-based cabs (Ola and Uber), auto-rickshaws, or a pre-booked private transfer. There is also a BRTS bus service but it is not practical with luggage. For most visitors, an app-based cab or pre-booked transfer is the easiest choice.

AMD has two terminals — Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international flights. The international terminal was expanded recently and is modern and well-organized.

After immigration — which takes 20 to 45 minutes for international arrivals — you collect baggage and pass through customs. The arrivals hall has currency exchange counters and ATMs dispensing Indian rupees (INR). International SIM cards and local prepaid SIMs are available at counters just outside arrivals.

The exit leads to a covered pickup area. Pre-booked transfer drivers wait with name signs just outside the arrivals gate. The pre-paid taxi counter is clearly signposted inside the terminal before you exit. App-based cabs have a designated pickup zone.

Uber and Ola both operate at AMD and are the most popular choice among locals. Prices are transparent and you do not need to negotiate. However, during peak hours or late at night, surge pricing can push fares up significantly.

The pre-paid taxi counter inside the terminal offers fixed prices based on your destination. You pay at the counter, get a receipt, and are assigned a driver. No negotiation, no meter anxiety.

Auto-rickshaws are the quintessential Ahmedabad experience. They are cheap and everywhere, but they are open-sided three-wheelers with limited luggage space. Fine for a solo traveller with a backpack, less ideal with two suitcases.

The short distance keeps prices reasonable. To central Ahmedabad (Lal Darwaja, Navrangpura, CG Road area), expect:

Ahmedabad is one of the more affordable cities in India for transport. Even the premium options are inexpensive by international standards.

AMD handles international flights arriving throughout the night, particularly from the Gulf states and Southeast Asia. If you land between 23:00 and 05:00, your options narrow but do not disappear.

Uber and Ola are available 24/7 but surge pricing at night can push fares to 1.5–2x normal rates. Pre-paid taxis operate around the clock, and their fixed prices do not change at night — making them a good late-night option.

Auto-rickshaws are scarce after midnight and not recommended for airport pickups at that hour. A pre-booked transfer is the most stress-free option for late arrivals, especially if it is your first time in India.

Indian taxis and ride-hailing vehicles do not typically carry child seats. If you need one, a pre-booked transfer company is your only reliable option — request it at the time of booking.

For families with multiple suitcases, an SUV or minivan through Ola/Uber or a pre-booked transfer is advisable. Standard sedan taxis (usually Maruti Dzire or similar) have modest boot space and fitting four suitcases is a challenge.

The arrivals area has trolleys available and the walk to the pickup zone is short and covered.

Pre-paid taxi: After paying at the counter inside, you are directed to the taxi stand immediately outside.

Uber/Ola: Follow signs to the designated app cab pickup area, which is a short walk from the exit. The app will show you the exact location.

Auto-rickshaws: Available at the stand just beyond the taxi area. You may need to walk a couple of minutes past the main exit.

The airport has free Wi-Fi for 45 minutes, which is enough to book a ride or contact your hotel.

Use Uber/Ola if: you have a local SIM or working data connection, are comfortable with app-based services, and want the cheapest comfortable option.

Take the pre-paid taxi if: you do not have a working phone or data, want a fixed price, and are arriving during normal hours.

Take an auto-rickshaw if: you are solo with light luggage, arriving during the day, and want an authentic Ahmedabad experience right from the airport.
